Hi All,

I will run a couple of style challenges in July. I mulled around a couple of ideas but decided run an Art Challenge first of all.

Posting.

Please post your own thread for the challenge - but keep it to one thread per person per week. You can use finds if you prefer not to post pictures.

Week 1: Art Challenge. Week starting July 1st.

Below are four artworks that I like and I have identified with at various stages of my life. In fact I own a print of the Whiteley one. They are all Oceania based - NZ, Australia and Polynesia.

Choose an artwork, and create an outfit based around the painting. It might be based on the colours, or the ideas, or the emotions. Keep in mind my art knowledge is not at a high level!!

If you want to create two or three outfits around the same artwork or an outfit for each artwork - that is fine.

Very cool. A little art history! Rita Angus is very interesting. There’s a strong visual - at least - connection to California Impressionism. Toffee and lavender seems very au courant to me fashion-wise... that’s what I’d do for her work...

Wonderful! I look forward to it. Spontaneously, I am drawn to the Whiteley. I will probably try that.

I love this. Thank so much for thinking up a challenge.

The selection of artwork is magnificent. Like Katerina, I too am most drawn to the Whiteley. That would certainly be the easiest for me to dress for given my current mix of wardrobe and color palette.

However, I don't always like easy. That makes me consider whether the Gauguin should be my inspiration. It would force me out of my comfort zone and make me use some less worn pieces of my wardrobe.

I'll post my results on July 7th. I look forward to reading everyone's results.

I thought this would be trickier, but I’ve got a great outfit planned (in my imagination) for the Rita Angus painting. The trick will be making sure all of the components are clean (not in the laundry hamper) so they can be worn simultaneously

Great I am pleased there are a few takers.

I am not even sure what I will do myself - probably the first one. I love the Gauguin but it has such a summery feel it feels out of reach in the cold frosty mornings!!

I'm in. Thinking of what I can come up with for an outfit. I will probably do the dish of oranges.

There’s a lot of orange in this art! I am looking in my closet and I don’t see anything orange at all! I have one or two pinky peach items, which if you squint and dim the lights could work. Based on colors, I can come up with outfits for Cass, and The Balcony. The bowl of oranges makes me think of my late MIL. She died in July two years ago. She gave me some ceramic bowls, one very similar to the blue bowl in the painting. I keep mine filled with lemons and its green partner is currently filled with limes, but often has oranges, clementines, or nectarines. I may do an outfit in her honor, but it would have nothing to relate it to the painting other than my memories.

Interesting how we see things - the last one is definitely orange to me of course (colour and subject).

I see the Angus scene as browns and lilac shades - maybe it is that I know the landscape here and it is dry grass with dusky shadows - see the pic below showing the landscape around this area.

What a lovely pic Sally! I will be doing 3 or 4 or both. Orange and blue, or cobalt blue, is a slam dunk for me.
