Lisa, I have to admit I had more than a little trepidation about the dress. Everything in the stores now is so form-fitting and beaded and embellished, I worried it was dated. And then there was the matter of the approximately 10-15 extra pounds I have on me now, compared to nine years ago. Spanx to the rescue.
Wearing a long, dramatic, trained ball gown to an event requires a certain amount of bravery. I was concerned there would not be many full-length gowns, and that people would think “who the hell does she think SHE is, swanning in here in that?” But if anyone thought that, they politely kept it to themselves. I got enough compliments to feel good, but not so many to make me feel uncomfortably conspicuous.
There was actually quite an eclectic mix of style. From classic to glam, funky, retro, and even downright underdressed. But we saw lots of friends in tuxes we’d never seen that way before, which is always fun. It was a blast to see and talk with everyone from our handyman to the admiral who is the Superintendent of the US Naval Academy.
