Ironing board question

My DD just left for a summer internship in another state, and I sent her off with (among other things) my steam iron; I bought her a small tabletop ironing board to go with it.

I turned around and bought a new Rowenta DW8080 for myself. It was a bit of a splurge, but I'm hoping it will be a great iron. Anyhoo, after reading the instructions, I found out that this iron requires an ironing board that has a mesh top. The ironing board I have is a run-of-the-mill metal one from Target. Seems sturdy enough to me, and it does have a mesh top. Is that all I need? Just wondering...

Good question and kudos for reading the directions! I usually skip that step. Sounds like a nice iron. I love my Rowenta too but mine is old. Maybe one of the sewers will chime in--they all seem to like to press

The mesh top is to release the steam downward and not back up to burn you. So if you have a mesh top ironing board already, it should be fine. Rowenta has very powerful steam and it is good and safe to let it escape downward.

Rowenta sells top notch mesh board, but I don't see why you would need one as long as yours aerates properly.

Thanks, Isabel. How can I tell if it aerates properly? The T-Fal iron I've been using for the past several years isn't a cheapy, but I don't think it has the same steam output as the Rowenta I just bought.

Hi Ruth, yes the Rowenta is more powerful in steaming which is part of what makes it so good.

By aeration, I meant that the steam escapes through the ironing board and does not deflect back up to you. That could burn you.

The Rowenta boards look like this...the mesh lets the steam escape downward, so it aerates out and away from you.

If your ironing board looks like that, then you will be fine because the mesh will let the steam escape. That is what I mean by aeration. Sorry for the confusion. Happy ironing.

Thanks, Isabel. My ironing board looks like that, so I guess I'm okay, though mine is not quite as sturdy as I'd like. Maybe I'm paranoid, but when I was a child, my mom's wooden ironing board (yes, they used to be made out of wood) fell over and the hot iron fell on my arm. I still have a scar from that burn.

Oh, that would freak me out too. The thing to remember about the Rowenta boards, are that they are "professional" boards. So those things are built to last through constant, all day use.

Now , with that said, if you feel that you may not be safe with yours, then you should get another for your own peace of mind. That is the most important thing !!!
