Rachy, I don't wear earrings at all, and usually my watch serves as jewelry for work. I generally don't wear much jewelry, occasionally a necklace for work, and rarely a bracelet outside of work.
Anyway, I would probably be tempted to add a small patterned scarf or a statement-y bag ( I have one in navy snakeskin), but wouldn't feel "unfinished" without them if that makes sense. To me it would depend on the occasion/purpose - if I was giving a talk at my institution where everyone knows me and I want them to focus on my talk/message, I would go for the "paired" down look as above. If I was giving a talk at a big conference, where some people know me but most don't, then I would add some eye-catching statement accessories, like the scarf or bag I mentioned above.
