There is so MUCH GOOD ADVICE here, I don't feel I can add much. I do have two suggestions though.

First, I bought a stand alone clothing rack, set it up in the bedroom, and used it to start building my capsules. It was amazing to me how things came together on the clothing rack. [Thanks for the suggestion, Joyce]

Second, the Vivienne Files (http://www.theviviennefiles.com) has some wonderful posts on building wardrobes from scratch and from existing outfits.
