I am saying corrugated for corduroy from now on.

I have eleven pairs of black pants, including:

2 denim
1 linen
2 cotton/poly "work-ish"
1 velvet
1 Athleta jogger
2 faux leather (updated because I just bought another pair, below)
2 corrugated

I really like texture, obvs.

I love corrugated!

I say I don't wear black. But I do wear black pants.
Not counting black yoga pants (they are all black) and black joggers (all black), I have:

One pair of black jeans
One pair of black wide-legged pants
One pair of black boot-cut pants
One pair of black, extremely wide-legged pants
One pair of black OTF pants

That makes 5. I am not going to double-check my closet.

Oops, I remembered one more — I have a pair of black velvet jeans in my holding zone. They’re there because that’s where I keep special occasion wear, and those jeans are “dressy” and way too much of a dog hair magnet to wear any time unless I leaving the house immediately.

I forgot these too — I guess the sarong pants count.

2 gear (tights + joggers), 4 jeans (all faded/washed black, in various cuts), and one other pair of jeans in the holding zone (trying to decide whether they're worth altering). Also a pair of black/grey plaid wool pants. I've culled quite a lot of black pants in different styles -- office-y cigarette/trouser types -- after accepting that they are in no way essential to my (life)style, no matter how awesome they look on Audrey Hepburn.

In terms of ratio to other colours, my other pants are either olive (6 pairs total, including gear) or blue denim (2), or a one-off, like floral Athleta tights, golden-brown cords, or very pale blush denim... I consider black and olive my essential colors for bottoms, blue denim a completer (purchased more for fit than color), and pretty much everything else a statement.

Another member of Team Zero.

One pair of dress pants.
One pair of corduroy.
Two pairs of jeans.
One pair of velour.
One pair of cotton capris.

Five! 2 leggings, 2 gear and 1 pair of jeans

I own 8 pair of pants, of which 2 pair are black. I did have 2 pair of black shorts, but they were one season wonders. 20+ wears apiece, they have been culled due to excessive fading, and pilling on the seat. (Who would have thought a denim product would pill?)

Black is the dominant neutral in my closet.

I am feeling much better about my "black pants count", after reading these responses.

To explain LMA's remark: when he was 3, I was working part-time in a paper-crafting store and had a small hand tool that would corrugate any paper you cranked through it. LMA once spent the entire 4-5 hour flight from Philadelphia to Phoenix running pieces of scrap paper through my corrugator. Dollar bills, in-flight napkins, any other paper bits he could cadge from nearby travelers.

Who were, no doubt, so grateful he was quiet that they were happy to give him anything.

I have 6 pair, if I include my overalls, and 2 pair of gear pants. I was tempted by the black corduroy pants you ordered but decided to wait. I don't really need another pair of pants but they are calling me.

Is this a trick question, LOL? Because I have a lot, and that’s after a closet clean out. I’m actually kind of afraid to count. I really like black.

Ah, though they were 40 plus years ago, black pants still remind me too much of my waitressing days! Especially with a white shirt on top. They are no friend to lint or pet hair, either. I only have one pair, a cotton Japanese fisherman pant, very lightweight, good for summer. I do have a couple pair of dark denim pants that are actually a very deep blue, but with blackish tones, which I really love. But black on the top...I have many of those!

I have an old pair of black jeans and 1 black trouser in different material for each season: wool for winter, viscose for spring, linen for heatwaves. I like the idea of a corrugated one!

When the the time is right, I will replace the old pieces with a similar one in navy or grey.

You absolutely can wear purple regularly with black! Reminds me of the plum bag in Victoria's last post.

I'm a part-time member of Team Zero, since I moved all black clothes to my UK capsule wardrobe. Over there, I have: black jeans, straight but fluid cut dress trousers, & slightly cropped wide legs. ETA: cargo pants! If you're counting strictly gym leggings too, that makes 5 pairs of black 'trousers' total

PS I'm impressed that a 3 year old knows the word corrugated - I used it with my husband the other day & he hadn't a clue!

2 pair sweatpants (100% of lounge pants)
2 gear leggings + 1 rain pants (60% of gear pants)
2 out-in-the-world leggings, 1 skirt leggings, 1 corduroy skinnies (25% of out-in-the-world pants)

also 2 pr identical lightweight overalls, one of which was sort of meant to be demoted to grubby/gardening when it started showing wear and I rebought, but both of them are in my mending pile at the moment.

And 1 pair cropped stretch crepe pants that don't really fit in my holding zone, which would be 100% of my summer pants, unless you count the khakis I just bought that need to be hemmed.

Let’s just go with lots.

Yikes, almost all of my pants are black. I have black dress pants (2 pairs), black casual pants (3 pairs), black leggings (multiple pairs, both for home and wearing out), black faux leather joggers, black faux leather dress pants, black actual leather pants (which I almost never wear, as they are structured like jeans). I'm ALWAYS looking for black pants, whether I need them or not because they are such a staple in my wardrobe that you never know when a pair will become damaged or too worn.

Was just thinking about this today…3 ponte, 1 denim, 2 silk, 1 Vince legging…

I’ve had more in the past and still feel like there’s a hole or two I need to fill, yikes!

Cute nephew!

1 pair tailored pants
1x Lululemon on the fly
1x shorts

Gear
1x ponte
3x legggings
1x short leggings
1x running shorts
2x cycle shorts

I am slowly reducing black in my closet especially for winter. I did used to enjoy black jeans and may get some more.

Black bottoms are the largest part of my gear wardrobe. It’s boring but it works and I don’t see this changing.

Three pairs of black pants, all of which have matching jackets or vests. I prefer to match my fabrics in a suit where possible. I love black as a dark neutral and so don't think this is excessive.

If you wear something with enough regularity to justify the closet real estate it requires, even if you feel you have "too many," rock on.

That's my feeling anyway.

As a country girl, I still think people who just throw on black because it’s easy are way too glamorous & cool. I don’t try to keep pace, just stay on my lane with my ditzy florals & patterns.

I agree, April! I thought OMG that’s a lot when I started counting, but the truth of the matter is that black pants are by far the most versatile way, other than blue denim, for me to dress my bottom half. They’re practical, versatile, and tend to be more flattering than most other options. So you’re right, I don’t have too many!

I take the 5th on this, but really, black (and other) pants come in so many fabrications, widths, rises, etc. Maybe a better and less incriminating question would be: How many IDENTICAL black pants do you have other than perhaps exercise gear? It seems to me that I read a lot of variety that we here would differentiate. My husband? Maybe not so much.

Whoa, hot topic April ! I can think of 8 including my summer shorts, which probably means around 10.

A lot fewer than I used to own. During my working days, most of my bottoms were black. The majority have moved on to new homes. Now I have three pair of very casual joggers in cotton and techno fabrics. I kept one pair of “perfect for me” hi-waist/wide-leg black trousers for nicer occasions.

The thing I like about black tailored work pants is that they are such a fall back for me for important work meetings, funerals and the odd evening function. Styled differently of course. I know other colours could cover the same hole but not as easily.

Wow, I'm impressed with those who have zero!

I have 9, plus 2 pairs of shorts. Not counting gear. My black pants:
- 2 pairs in a techno travel fabric (one cropped, one full length)
- 2 harem (one summer rayon knit, one winter boiled wool jersey)
- 1 wool pinstripe lantern style
- 1 micro-pleated knit cropped wide-leg
- 3 denim (one Levis dark black, two lantern style off-black denim pants).

I always say I'm trying to move away from black, because it's not my most flattering neutral. But I guess I must like it, or I would have gotten down to zero by now.

Zero if counting only pants worn in public.
