I sometimes also hang a scarf with an outfit, but I find it wrinkles them. Usually, scarves are folded in 4 and placed into a large drawer I have devoted to them in a Ikea wardrobe. (I mention this because drawers in these wardrobes offer more flat surface, are easy to pull, and this makes a big difference esp. for scarves you want to be able to see).
I have an over-the-door towel rail with three bars on the back of my closet door, and I just drape all the scarves over it. It sticks out from the door by about 4 inches so there is enough space to let the scarves all dangle down behind the bars so I can see everything. At the moment it is a bit overcrowded but it works pretty well.
I have the same Ikea scarf holder Kari is describing. I do not see an online link. It's one hanger with lots of holes on it to poke the scarves through.
Here is the promised picture. I had to use the flash, the colors are not quite accurate. I really like this storing method. I can see at a glance all my scarves and they don't wrinkle. While I am at it, some more pictures so you can see how I store all my accessories. This is the left wall of our tiny walk-in closet with slanted ceilings, where my accessories live. My fashion necklaces are hung on hooks on the wall and draped over the sides of the clothes organizer, along with a few bracelets I own.To the right you can see the purple plastic organizer where I keep all my fashion earrings and rings. Each clear pocket holds 1 or 2 pairs of earrings. Right in front of it is a belt hanger that I fashioned using this as a model: http://www.evriholder.com/Round-A-Belt.asp
Right next to the belt hanger is something else I fashioned where I pinned all my brooches in order to keep them in one place.
Lower levels of the organizer hold my socks, tights and underwear.
My fine jewelry reside in a drawer in our bedroom.

QM: I'm super-duper constrained on closet space, which is how I came to the towel rack idea. If I ever get around to trying it out, I'll post a report.
Here are some photos of my scarf storage, Suz. The bedroom renovation a few years ago gave me the chance to expand and custom design my closet for the first time ever. Three years later, I'm still in LOVE with it.

Usually flung - or when I'm being good, neatly folded - on the top shelf on my hall closet, so I can see all the colours available. I also drape scarves that go best with certain coats on the coat's hanger. How's that for scientific?
Mine are in 2 places, and my storage method definitely needs revising. My silk scarves are on a rack hanger of some sort (probably for ties) at the back of my closet, but I plan to change this to folding them and placing them in a clear lidded bin to keep the dust off. My heavier scarves are on the back of one of the doors leading out of my bedroom on a coat/scarf hanger, but it's a bit hard to see the lower layers.
Bella, I love your scarf shelf! That is a fabulous idea.

Thanks so much for all these wonderful ideas. And pictures! The visuals really help! I love seeing how you all manage your things! Loved that idea of a towel rack with knotted scarves; it could be really pretty (if you had the right combo).
Right now I have heavy outdoor scarves in a bin near my door or on my coat hook near the door if I am regularly wearing them. And I have the rest of them folded on a shelf, but they don't really stay neatly, so I was thinking either a basket to contain them or a hanger of some kind. Now I'm thinking some combination might be best of all!
