Thanks for more fab input and links! Turns out I couldn't have used a pair of sneaks of this trip anyway. We've had huge snow followed by rain, and my mom ended up with a post surgery setback that has kept me indoors and in emergency rooms (all is well --- just one of those typical complications).

I'm leaning toward a black pair --- low profile, but with some arch support. If I fore go the idea of running on vacation, walking, hiking and doing circuit style workouts, I should be able to stay active and have footwear that would do double duty. While I love my cons, a little more support is necessary, I think.

I caved for my last Euro trip and bought a pair of EasySpirit lightweight slip on all black sneakers with a medium profile and a thicker sole. Because the laces were not conspicuous, neither were the shoes. I own Eccos, AGL black sneakers, Josef Seibels, and nearly every other comfort brand that fits my foot. There was something about their roominess and lightweight fabric, coupled with an extra stable footbed that meant I didn't have to think about my fussy feet all day. I didn't feel fashion forward, but changed into other shoes for times when I wasn't walking over 4 miles. It worked. Now, are they good running shoes? I can't say as I am a fast, long distance (6-10 miles/day) walker when I travel. They look a lot like the ones gryffin posted, with a little less detailing. I also find it helps to add my own insole. Good luck with your search. There is nothing more important than shoes in these situations.
