Ahahahhaa oh yes. Once, about a year after my husband and I got married, we went to his cousin's wedding.
Let me explain. I'm from Long Island, where what seem like normal, not OTT weddings to us are, actually, OTT. Open bars are the norm, tons of food, people dress fairly fancy (not black tie, usually, but semiformal,) etc. Husband is from semi-rural West Virginia, where weddings tend to be, as he puts it, "meatballs in the church basement."
Now, I would know better than to get too dressed up for a meatballs-in-the-church-basement affair, but his cousin lives in a small city in Kentucky, and the wedding was in the evening in a hotel. So I thought it would be more like the weddings I was used to, and I wore a black cocktail dress.
Uh. no. I felt like a complete fool. There were people there wearing jeans! I still laugh thinking about that wedding. It was a perfectly fine event and we had a great time, but ever since I've toned it down a lot when we have events on that side of the family!
