Your hair is lovely both ways. I hear high praise for Kerastase purple shampoo for keeping gray hair silver looking but haven’t tried it myself. Their other products have been lovely.

I used to use purple shampoo…..not anymore. If your hair is colored it may still require a purple shampoo to prevent brassiness. Hair without dye is less likely to become brassy unless exposed to chlorine, sun, and minerals from hard water. So, you may consider buying a water filter for your shower head, and wear a sun hat outside…..

Your hair is beautiful and the curls are lovely! After 15 years of silver hair, have tried a bunch of products (ouch) and found that SBC shampoo is the least drying and provides the best results. One option is mixing your regular shampoo with purple shampoo, so you get a bit in every time you wash your wash your hair.

This is my current hair care plan: I use purple shampoo each time I wash my hair-the first lather is 100% SBC, the second lather is 100% other shampoo. You may find that that your hair needs a full purple shampoo every time you wash it—your local water, heat from hairdryer, flat iron, curling iron, etc. can also affect hair color and make it appear more yellow. Every 4-6 weeks, I try to use a clarifying shampoo. Good luck and enjoy your beautiful hair!

Ooh pretty curls! Do they do that without any effort?

I use a purple shampoo very sparely, I had read that they leave a coating and can be drying. TBH I don't really see much difference anyway. I don't think I would bother unless you start seeing a yellow tone that you don't like.

Your hair is beautiful and to my eye doesn’t need anything other than what you are currently doing! I stopped coloring my hair about five years ago at the age of 65. I’m about 75% silver/gray now and I do use a purple shampoo once or twice a month. It does not seem to dry my hair and it takes out any yellow. I’ve tried a few brands and currently use L’Oréal’s Magnesium Silver.

Ah Suz, I live in a soft water area too, I hadn't considered that.

Elpgal, thank you for the recommendation , I have heard of but never tried that brand, it could be a nice treat.

Staysfit, there's a small amount of colour at the bottom so I will keep an eye on that section.

Avebabe, thanks for including your method, I really appreciate it.

Robin, I have to focus on condition to prevent frizz and use a gel for hold but I don't use and styling tools.

Katya, thanks for the recommendation.

I use Aveda’s purple shampoo and conditioner about once every 7-10 days. It removes brassiness and makes my gray brighter. If I’m wearing a top with a certain purple tone, my hair can have a lavender cast on the day it is washed. This dissipates over time. This photo was taken about five days after a ‘purple’ wash. My base hair color is dark brown. My blonde friends who have tried purple shampoo don’t have the same kind of results that I do so I guess your mileage may vary.

Good luck with your research.
