What a touching story. It is even more touching that you and DH were willing to accept the moment for what it was instead of wishing for some "different".
One of my favorite stories is of a friend who took her mom on a plane to FL at a time when the mom has advanced Alzheimer's . Her mom was like a child, as she told it, on a plane for a her first time . Though she had been spending winters in FL with her husband for decades. Her mom also decided that a young man on the plane was really "cute" and wondered if he "liked" her. She had her mom fix her hair and straighten up......This young man ended up playing along and flirting with her the entire time, held her hand. At the end, the mom said to my friend, " I think he is the first boy that has ever liked me back. " : )
Sometimes you just have to go with what you are given. : )
