I was flipping through this cool book An Uncommon History of Common Things, and a section on shoes caught my attention. Here's the opening line for the section on high heeled shoes:

"A shoe is meant to protect the foot and allow a human to walk more comfortably: if it doesn't do either of those things, it's probably a high-heeled shoe."
