Seems like you made up your mind already... I do like it and can appreciate the history and technical side of it, I just can't picture it in the kitchen I remember from your thread (but I couldn't look it up on the phone). If you do end up getting it I would really like to see the end result.

Astrid, i still have to check it out in person, but yeah, my mind was made up as to whether **I** like it before I posted. My question, and once again, I should’ve realized it wasn’t clear, was how other people would respond. I probably should’ve emphasized that when I asked “what do you think?” I meant it. Or maybe I should’ve said “how does it make **you**feel?” And said it was perfect for me in every way, not only measurements.

Mostly joking but not entirely, the washer/dryer is in the kitchen, so it fits that way! I might even use it for its intended purpose, in addition to its being a dinner table. The dryer uses condensation, which means things are dry, warm, and very wrinkled. I only use it for bedsheets—i hang everything else. There is a Wikipedia article with the pic Carla posted that says mangels are often still used to iron things. Our laundromat in Jena had one, but that was a decade ago. Of course, modern ones are heated, but maybe, if I take the sheets from the w/d while they are still warm, it might help. If that works, it’s a bonus. Mostly it will be our dinner table. Otherwise I was planning to build one with a “natural” slab and a hinge or two like this.

And yes, I’ll post a pic when the kitchen is “done”.

This is the kitchen. Very bland. Minimalism overload. A **very** blank canvas.

Right, I didn't read it that way. I thought you were undecided. The kitchen is really minimalist overload, not my taste either. But I think it's a style many people like so it's a selling point in a rental. If I ever get to pick a kitchen and have money to spend I would go for (natural looking) wood with clean lines.

Astrid, i agree with you on all counts there! The kitchen in my mind, before we wound up in a place with one built in, is rustic, with lots of wood and lots of open storage. One day I’ll buy my own place, and there will be no minimalist grey, smooth, handle-less cabinets to be seen.

ETA no condensation dryer either!

My current kitchen is also white and grey, but it's not a tenth as nice as yours. Let's say it's serviceable and leave it at that. I'm working on making it a bit nicer, but I don't want to spend a lot of money on it. My landlord bought new cheap PVC because I was handed down a mold problem when I moved in (that's solved now) and I got to pick, I went with something a little bit more fun. It was grey before that...

Nice pattern! And the drawers don’t look so bad—serviceable, as you say, and about as grey as mine.
I know EBK is considered a selling point, but doing my own kitchen (even without money) has always been a plus of living in Germany for me. This is the first time I’ve had a built-in here, and the first German lease I’ve signed with the intention of moving out in a couple years.

Oh, those drawer fronts are new, that's why they look so immaculate. The old ones were all cracked up and everything so I bought new ones at Ikea. They're white not grey (the Veddinge ones). The only problem was that this is an old IKEA kitchen and they changed measurements a few years ago. Which meant I had to made these fit... But it was worth the effort. They still get handles, btw. Some of the doors look really bad too, but those aren't as easy to replace for cheap.

Yay! Thanks Momo!

Turns out there are a bunch more of them out there than I had realized. I won't drag you all through all the twists and turns until I get one, will just post once it's in the kitchen.

This one doesn't have legs to get in the way (if need be, I'll add them at the front corners), has a smaller gear, so less potential bumping, and costs less.

I say if you love it, and it fits your space and life, get it! If other people complain (though unlikely) its your house, not theirs.

I love it too! Life is short, if it bring you joy to look at it.. go for it, you'll make it work. My entire interior (and exterior for that matter) is built on that premise.

Congratulations, love is love. Definitely a character piece.
