Saw your comment on the blog post, and thought that I could best answer you here.

Picture #1: There is no sagging crotch fit on these red trousers, yet they are looser than "the '90s trouser fit". I prefer the looser look because it looks more boyish, on trend and modern to my eye.

Picture #2: The sagging part that you see here is caused by my pose - left leg out and resting on right leg.

I hope that makes sense!

Not Zap either : ) I'm looking for machine washable pants and would love to try these. Trying in-store is not possible and returns are difficult and expensive for me. Would you be able to give some advice on sizing? I wear size 4 in Gap "modern boot" and JCrew "city" or "favourite" fit trousers, 2 in JCrew khakis/chinos. Should I go with a 4 or 6 in these?

To my eye, this is exactly how colored denim should fit. I have grown tired of seeing
legging-like skinny colored bottoms.

Thank you Angie. I do wear my trousers a bit loose and thought for a while that they will never pass YLF muster because they do wrinkle with movement, as in picture #2. I got the idea from seeing post after post of member's pants being returned because of similar fit. i.e. wrinkles that were probably caused by movement / pose.

I just wanted to clarify that I would never, never even dare to even *hint* that something of yours fits improperly. My gosh, your clothes look custom made. I am still trying to get my head around how you manage to do that, with off the rack clothes and minimal tailoring! I honestly thought that the relaxed fit on crotch was now ok, but the photos explain it well! In my book, whatever you wear and how it fits, becomes style gospel for me immediately.

I really like the cut of those pants and would love to find something that fits me similarly, as a change of pace from jeans. It seems the chino-type pants I've had in recent years would stretch out a lot with wearing, so by the end of the day I have baggy-butt and low-hanging-crotch syndrome. Not pretty. So I'd pretty much given up on non-jean casual pants.

Sarah, I hope that they work for you too.

Belladogga, Express styles run smaller than the Gap and J. Crew. I would try a size 6, although I would not machine wash these trousers. They will never look the same again!

FYI: These are the Columnist - not the Editor (which do not fit me). Generally, but this is not a rule, curvier and more muscular thighs work better in the Editor - extremely well in fact. Like WOW good.

I'm obviously not Angie, but I thought I'd offer my input on size. I have about a 26 inch waist and 38 inch hips. I originally ordered these pants in size 4 but had to return them because they were much too tight in the hip/butt area. The 6 was a much better fit. And I'll second what Angie said about machine washing. I have never considered throwing these in the washer for fear they would never look the same again. I like them WAY too much to take that risk, so I dry clean mine.

Hmmm... the dry cleaning recommendation is a consideration. I'm a big procrastinator when it comes to dropping off and collecting dry cleaning so I often end up with items not available when I want to wear them... but perhaps these could be my special occasion trousers. I have a 27 inch waist and 37 inch hips - I think I'll try the Size 6 in the Columnist. Perhaps when I get them I'll even summon the courage to post my first WIW.

I find this thread extremely interesting. I bought a pair of pants a year or so ago that fit similar to those. The sales clerk tried to talk me into downsizing as she thought they were way too big on me. I thought they were just right.

As to keeping them on, I find a wider belt works wonders for adding a bit of stiffness to the waist and even if it isn't snug, it keeps them from moving much.

Great post. I found it very helpful in terms of pants fit.

I agree on the dry cleaning. I have Editors, which I either hand or machine washed, and they look horrible. The ones in heavy rotation now I have dry cleaned exclusively. They are about 2 years old and they look brand new.

So what happened to the non-dry cleaned Express pants? Shrunk in length? Width? Stretched? Fabric faded? I really hate to take stuff to the dry cleaners. . .

If you have a dryer, I would highly recommend using Dryel at home, vs. dry cleaning (if you're like me and you can never manage to get to the dry cleaner). I should add that I saw these pants on Angie in person, and the fit was very clean and tailored through the hips and thighs, but definitely not snug or saggy crotch-y :).

You are sweet, Zap. Hugs! The sagging crotch fit issue on trousers is a tricky one. Ideally you don't want a saggy crotch when standing still - that fit requires waist alteration.

Donna ~They faded and developed some sort of peeling that formed tiny balls around the seams. I must say I do wash most of my clothes in gentle cycle, inside out and air dry. I do use dryel between dry cleanings.
