@Glory
I would say it isn't just extra work but is really easier on the clothes. And it's definitely easier to toss the cheap ones away. I threw a lot into a bag yesterday to see what I really have left and it was very difficult to put some things in there, even if I hadn't worn them or felt good in them for a while

@Thistle
I agree, 100% cotton doesn't hold up so well.

Astrid, air driers & reluctant washing machine users unite! I'm sorry again so much of your closet has worn out. I too am on a very tight budget, and if I didn't have access to secondhand shopping, I'd feel overwhelmed. I don't have any solutions for you but lots of commiserations.

Thanks. I probably should replace those basic things and see what I really need to build more outfits instead of buying more pieces I won't have anything to pair with. I actually think thrifting is a good option when you have good resources, second hand style here isn't my style at all so I am never successful.

What's T K Maxx like? I generally get basics from TJ Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, and Nordstrom Rack in the states, so I figure that with some careful choices and sticking with the clearance racks I can get mid-quality basics for prices where it's okay if it only lasts 1-3 years.

Alternately (and I know this doesn't work in most professional environments and only with certain styles) I keep an eye out for items that could still look somewhat intentional and attractive as they age and distress. So pure cotton, leather, and linen in tans and grays and 'natural' tones look good, acrylic and PU shoes don't. Corduroy and denim and casual velvet are okay for awhile even fading and wearing when paired with newer clothes, a pilly knit top really isn't. Sometimes I think just having better buttons or metal finishes can make the difference between 'artful' aging, and looking cheap and used up.

I'm currently struggling a lot with fading blacks though, especially socks.
OTOH I have had a fitted Calvin Klein black velvet double-breasted peacoat for over a decade, and though I've rationed it more lately, and it's even begun to fade slightly at the tops of the shoulders from sun exposure (in a rainy climate, but I've worn it for half of every year) it still looks good in a romantic classic way.

Thanks Rabbit. We do have TKmaxx, but I wasn't convinced the one time I was there. I'm still a student, so I don't have to pay as much attention to professional attire yet. I actually like the look of well loved items, but well loved and worn out are different things and my knits look worn out most of the time.
