I'm in a little bit of an emotional funk these last couple of days (a sad anniversary -- does it every year), and I'm not terribly motivated for outfits right now, so I'm reaching for FFBOs. However, I got an urge to wear some nail polish on my hands, which I almost never do anymore. So I gave myself a little mini manicure. Thought I'd share the result with you. I keep getting surprised by the sight of my dark wine fingertips, but I like it. Perhaps I'll make an effort to do this more often.

I used to sport colorful nails all the time when I was younger, but I lost interest in the last decade or so. Although I started going for colorful toes in the warmer months.

How about you? Nail polish or no? Bold colors or natural ones? I think I'll do a deep blue next.

I think it looks really nice. I don't usually put polish on my fingernails but mostly because it never stays long enough and I find it looks unkempt for a day or two until I get around to removing it. I do my toes especially in summer.

Sorry for the sadness. I think you are doing a good thing for it. A little tribute sort of, but a bit of fighting back too.

I'm the opposite of you. I never wore nail polish until about 3 years ago and now I can hardly stand to be without it. I have big boney hands...great for piano, I can reach a 10th...but not so great looking. I was always trying pale pink because I thought it would look inconspicuous, but it just looked silly on my big hands plus it brought out the red tone in my skin. But a few years ago a friend gave me a brownish taupe for a gift and it was true love. Now I always go for the unusual colors and have fun every time.

Mine never lasts more than two days, but I just take it off and switch colors. Today is that day so I will add a picture later. I'm thinking wine, to give you a bit of support. Or maybe olive green.

Beautiful colour for fall/winter! And a neat job! My toenails are always painted and finger nails are almost always au natural. I can so relate to your current sadness and hope your spirits will lift again soon. Allow yourself to feel what you feel and take good care of yourself.

Your nails look great. If I wear polish on my fingers, it's almost always neutral. I tend to screw up the painting process so neutral is less noticeable. If I have them done at a salon with shellac (so it sticks a long time) then I'll pick something brighter and fun. My toes are almost always something bright like orange, coral, white, or burgundy.

That's a gorgeous color on your lovely hands, Janet! It's nice to give yourself the time of a manicure when you are feeling sad and introspective, isn't it? I've been trying to polish my nails more often recently, partly just to give myself time to relax and wait for the paint to dry. I prefer lighter colors for my nails, but I do have some rich dark shades that I usually save for my toes. One is a nice dark blue--you've inspired me to give it a try on my hands again.

It only occurred to me after looking at the pics on here that polishing my nails is a bit of a tribute to my mom, fittingly enough. It was not a conscious decision at all, but it hit me when I looked at the photos -- my hands look so much like my mother's, and she always took such nice care of her nails.

I appreciate the good thoughts. The sadness will lessen and pass, as it does every year at this time. I am doing my best to acknowledge my feelings without wallowing in them.

So sorry you're sad:( I have moments like that, too, then realize why I'm feeling blue...funny how our mind and body works!

Pretty nails..I love the darker colors lately...I just had a pedi and have dark eggplant polish...almost black but a tint or redish purple...love it!

Pretty nails and gorgeous color on you! My mum got me into the habit of painting my nails too. She was pretty shocked and unhappy when I stopped painting them after child birth (lack of time). She took it as not taking care of myself. And she was right.

I think it is a nice tribute to your mom. I always eat my dad's favorite foods on a particular day. I think it is a helpful thing to focus on fond memories. My mom, FWIT, doesn't "get" my stranger colors, so I went with a color she likes...a nice, normal red. Doesn't seem right to add my picture to your post, maybe at some other time.

Your hands look amazing..I polish my nails as a tribute to my precious Mama...She kept her nails done and had my long fingers...I grow into her hand yearly...
I know memories are difficult and this gloomy fall does not make them better...I can only say that I do understand the memories and the missing part...I always try to couple the sadness with something funny that she and I got into...I'll bet you can too...
Remember this too shall pass away..

Ahhh Janet - sorry that you're going through a sad anniversary period! I am too - my father passed away 4 years ago this month (can't believe that it has been that long!) and I miss him terribly!

I love your nails and how they are a tribute (unconscious) to your mother! What kind and color is the polish? I have been on the look-out for a burgandy polish that doesn't have any orange in it and haven't had much luck just yet.

I am a nail polish fan - both toes and fingers year round! I find that if I wear an "edgy" polish color and combine it with a fairly modern classic outfit - along with my fairly edgy hairstyle - that that is all I need to achieve the style that I'm after! Right now I have OPI Lucern-tainly Look Marvelous (a gun-metal shade) on my fingers, and Essie For The Twill of It on my toes. I love both shades! Also, OPI's Russian Navy is a nice deep dark navy blue - even though it looks more purple in the bottle it dries as a blue - you might want to check it out!

Your hands look lovely, the color of the polish is beautiful. I know what you mean about being "surprised" when you look at your hands, it's happened to me if I wear dark nail polish on my toes. My nails are thin so I always wear polish. If I leave my nails natural for a day or two, they "hurt" like it's very sensitive under the nail. It's weird, probably all in my mind. I favor medium to dark colors: from silvery-gray to dark taupes and black. All fun.

Thanks, all! The kind thoughts are most appreciated. I know many of you have lost parents too and know how hard it is. I am sending hugs back out!

Marley, the polish is Misa and the color is called Serene Rosewood. The gunmetal and blue you mentioned sound great! I will keep an eye out for those.

I'm going to try adding another top coat every day or two to see if that will help this last longer. We'll see how long polish holds up when I'm on the ranch in a week!

BTW I blame you entirely for my present awkwardness at managing to type this. I am ve-r-r-r-ry carefully just using the pads of my fingers so as not to ruin my just freshly done nails!

Sorry you're feeling blue. I started wearing polish a couple of years ago (in my late 50s) in my quest for body acceptance. Over 15 years ago, I developed scleroderma so now I have Reynaud's and permanently curled fingers with ridged and discolored nails. As long as attention is brought to my hands via my fingerless gloves, the nails may as well look nice! Right now, for the first time I am wearing a navy blue from Essie. I normally wear light or dark metallic gray or sometimes blue. I rarely wear traditional colors because they feel too girly to me.

I never used to wear nail polish but have started in the last year. I love it! However, it takes so long to do a proper manicure that I rarely wear polish. I did wear some black polish for Halloween, however, and I plan on wearing some red polish soon (today or tomorrow)!

I wear both neutral and dark colors. However, I'm not a fan of the "crazy" colors, like bright greens and blues. For stand-out colors, I like reds. I will occasionally try a very dark purple, navy, or black. I am not sure that I liked the black polish I wore for Halloween. I have very bony hands, like Peri's, with verrrrry long fingers (some of my friends used to jokingly call me E.T.). I play piano too; they're good for piano playing. But I think that the nail polish just makes my fingers look even longer! Not sure it's a good look sometimes.

I wear nail polish all year round, and in Summer a complimentary colour on my toe-nails.
Burgundy on my toes ATM, and pale pink with a sparkly aqua on my ring-fingers

I don't wear polish due to work restrictions (or think is so/not preferred) but would like happier, nicer-looking hands--mine take a beating from constant washing and antiseptic and not much lotion-time in between. I always thought it'd be too much of a luxury for just a "natural" manicure (which in theory I could do myself, but don't!) but maybe I should reconsider--if I thought it would actually make a visible difference to do so regularly, I think I would.

I always wear fun coloured nail polish on my toes in the summer. I used to wear nailpolish on my fingers, but when I do, my nails look freaking good (if I do say so myself) and I find myslef not enjoying myself in order to protect them. Rediculous. Esp in the summer, I won't play in the sand because of my nails... So I kinda got out of the habit.

...also gingerly typing as I've just applied a topcoat to my own merlot with subtle shimmer nails. I have every color under the rainbow and then some, including glitter, sand, matte, holographic and plenty of cremes. I've been wearing variants of burgundy, merlot, cabernet, pinot for some reason the last couple of months, so either I'm craving red wine a lot more or it's a phase I'm going through. I almost never go "naked" as my nails tend to be brittle.
