Tootsie is a great movie, Rae -- meaningful even to a young girl, which is what I was when I saw it. Definitely worth checking out.

Tootsie is one of my favorite movies. I saw it first as a teenager and was really moved. It did not lose its effect upon rewatching either.

I saw this clip earlier today, and did shed a few tears myself. What an epiphany, to realize that we ourselves have been the ones unwittingly discriminating against others, and that it's so wrong. That message applies to so many other aspects of personhood too. Imagine the world without prejudice, where we can see each other as we really are, regardless of race, nationality, religion, beauty, or any other superficial attribute.

I saw this yesterday and loved it.

I have always remembered a scene from "Tootsie" where Hoffman's (male) character is talking to a friend and saying about his female alter ego, "I just wish she were prettier." That scene expressed a lot of what he talks about in the link above -- that being pretty matters way more than it should.

See the original book by Anne Fine, English author and the book was called Madame Doubtfire I think, not Missus D. She also wrote a book called, Bill's New Frock, about a boy whose mother, for no particular reason, one morning sent him to school in a dress with shell buttons. He has a day of ............. It's aimed at young readers but a nice artefact for anyone. (I just found this thread sorry to add the laggard 's rant)

Great thread, and an all-time classic movie. All too often seen strictly as a comedy, but there are so many poignant moments of "woman's plight"--including the phrase mentioned above about wishing "she" were prettier. But the scene that gets me the most in that movie is when the guy is trying to put the moves on her, and she finds herself defenseless--running around the room trying to shoo him away like a rabid dog. It is a real eye-opener for men (hopefully?) as to the kinds of things women have to deal with on a regular basis, and its "just life" for us to be made to feel like objects that men can fondle and own. It is so empowering when Tootsie finally stands up for herself, but (and its been years since I've seen it) I recall that "she" finally had to come out of the disguise to get anything accomplished. Must Watch again soon with my boyfriend!
