It took me years to get the hang of this. Poor Angie....so patient. LOL
About 4 years ago, I decided to you use the Vivienne Files' common wardrobe as my template for the barest of essentials. Instead of the light khakis, mine are olive green. I've gotten away from black and use navy more. Denim and chambray are key. The button downs are flannel in the winter and linen in the summer. This is just for everyday casual.
This year I've added "dressy" sweatshirts". I will probably keep as an essential post pandemic. It'll be in grey.
In summer the denim pants would be culottes ( also in navy or black )
Additionally, gold and silver hoops and studs, chain bracelet and gold bangles ( thin ) . Black waterproof leather booties ( I'm LOVING grey footwear now ), black and neutral sandals, flip flops, and a dark grey sneaker. Dark tote and a dark bag ( winter )...grey in summer.
These things go with everything in my closet that I love : scarves, blazers, bags, jewelry, a bright color culotte in the summer.
I also have a small core of essential dressier clothes : black pumps, black blazer, black midi skirt, fancy black 3/4 sleeve sweater, pewter clutch.
