Aida, I think along the same lines actually. Today I wore LBD, it's almost the same length as this dress but has tulip style skirt and it felt different.
So, taking the bottom in a bit might do the trick. And I think it's worth giving it a chance at least until I find the replacement that ticks every single box. I like the dress and I know all too well that good one is a nightmare to find.
Last but not least (!) the husband has spoken today as well and he likes it very much

In that case, I vote let it out the 1-2" that you are able and have it also taken in so it tapers more; having it short WITH the taper may make it a bit too vavoom (though you've got the legs for it!).
