Anne, your speaker decor made me smile. It reminds me of my dad. My mom has struggled to get him not to "decorate" with his guitars and music equipment. My old bedroom has turned into a "music gear storage" area for amps and such. The guitars have been attractively stored on stands in the house though, so that's a good compromise.

My home decor is closer to the clothing style I aspire to than what I currently manage. We live in a log cabin on the prairie, and it is decorated with Persian carpets, leather furniture, Asian art on the walls, antique scientific equipment (husband's), bones and skulls (mine), and far too many books. It is quite rugged and practical and comfortable but also luxerious and beautiful - and very maximal/cluttered. Husband calls it California Colonial, and come to think of it, that's a decent style descriptor for my clothing aspirations as well (although I prefer East Meets Wild Wild West). Wow, E, this was a really useful thought experiment!

Two pics of the living room (one is too dark, sorry):

MuseumGal, your home is so fab!! And so YOU!!! I love it!

MuseumGal, I love your collections! How cool.

It is so interesting to see inside fabbers homes, the standard is very high.

The similarities between my home and wardrobe on a basic level are nada seeing as I live in a converted church but don't wear a robe

I guess there is a softness and approachability to most of the rooms which I hope to replicate through my style, although the house is more country than my wardrobe.

The living room (last photo) is an anomaly, DH and I dislike the drama and hope to redecorate soon.

I don't have time to respond to everyone individually right now, but I'll come back & do so later! I've read & enjoyed everyone's posts, and I've loved all of the photos too.

There are definitely parallels between the way I dress myself and the way I dress my house. Quality over quantity, the colours, simple clean lines, a mixture of modern and classic, with antique or vintage pieces that reflect my history, pleasure in textures and natural fibres and leather, art like my clothes that I appreciate for their beauty, and I change the accents, tone and accessories to suit the season.

In a word, yes! My home decor is no-nonsense and so is my clothing style. I'm not a lover of the tchotchke nor do I wear a lot, if any, accessories. I also put practicality first in both decor and clothing. In decor, our house isn't dictated by our 4 year old but layout, fabrics and some pieces are definitely child-friendly. With clothing, I don't wear my truly aspirational looks because I prioritize figure camouflage.

I think I have parallels too but want to become a different type of dresser.

My house is warm colours, pretty classic with an accessory or two to modernize it. But secretly i want to be clean, sleek, eclectic lots of white with bold colours.

I am not brave enough to totally change either that dramatically so I enjoy those of you who are that way.

Forgive some of the clutter, we just moved in 2 weeks ago. We did not paint these colours but I do intend to stay in similar colours/ shades / tones.

Secret confession: I look very closely at the background of your WIW pictures to see everyone's decorating style

This is a great thread!
Similarities: casual, rugged, practical, splashes of unexpected color like our red wood stove, splurges where it counts (bathroom tile is a mix of builder white 4" squares and expensive glass mosaics). Less is plenty-we downsized from 3500 sq ft to 1000 2 years ago and I only miss pantry space.

What I could learn about clothes from my decorating: PPP! I've waited 2+ years to find the right sofa. We don't have one, but it's on order. The calming factor of a restricted palette: I am much more disciplined in house colors than the closet.

What I could learn about my house from my closet: retiring worn things sooner. Less sentimental clutter.

I love Museum Gal's collections and wish I could figure out a way to bring our cool stuff into our space without it looking cluttered.

I would wear my bed spread-it's a Pendleton blanket and I do have a bolero jacket made from a Pendleton. So I guess there's a large overlap, with room to accommodate DH's preferences (but he keeps his guitars in his office/music room).

I guess my house reflects my style to some extent. There have been concessions to my husband (our dining table is covered with his camera equipment, for example), and nods to practicality (Rambling Ann, we have a Pendleton blanket on the bed too, but it's hidden by a light fleece blanket because two dogs like to sleep on top).

As mentioned earlier, we don't change our house as much or as fast as we change our personal style. If I had to build or buy a new house I think I would want modern (our house is a 50 year old brick ranch).

Elizabeth, your house sounds right up my alley. And when I travel, I like to find at least one little piece for my bookcase too.

Kari, your place looks great: I love how your attention to details ties everything together. And those colours are all gorgeous. But I have to admit, the puppy picture stole the show for me!

MG, your living room is SO cool!!! I want to come visit just to examine everything more closely. I’m so glad it was a useful thought experiment too: I can see how your decorating is entertwined with your style goals.

Joan, how neat you live in a converted church, although you made me giggle at your surplice-free wardrobe. Your rooms definitely look soft, soothing, and approachable: I can see how the red walls don’t really fit in.

DEB, you change your decor seasonally? Like, accents & bedding, or more substantial changes? I’m intrigued. Also, your love for pieces with a history and texture/fiber enjoyment is very similar to me. Sounds like you’ve created a beautiful home!

Kerry, how interesting! I love your straightforward attitude & how you want things that work for your regular life instead of fighting against it. I bet you have less dusting to do than me! (Although all of my tchotchkes live on my book case, so at least it’s only in one place.)

Thanks for sharing photos A: I can’t believe how unpacked/set up you are for having moved 2 weeks ago! Very impressive: it all looks great. How interesting that you have a shadow style waiting in the wings: perhaps you can add bits of it to your everyday looks?

Rambling Ann, love your reply, especially the ‘what I could learn’ bits! I’ll have to think about my own answers to that. I’m much more PPP about my decorating than clothing too. And I’m a fan of small spaces as well: i like their cosiness & how they’re easier to clean! I’m single & childless though, which makes small living easier.

JAilleen, I keep a light blanket on a corner of my bed for the dog too! Luckily she loves blankets, so as long as there’s one there, she’ll stay on it (so I don’t have to cover my whole bed to keep it protected). I’m hoping to move soon, so it’ll be interesting to see what the character of the apartment I end up in is like. I’m hoping for something a bit vintage/old-fashioned with lots of weather wood, but we’ll see. My sister is like you & prefers modern homes.

I'm thinking about this a lot right now as we embark on some renos. I've recently shifted from liking busy patterns and contrasting colours to more tonal, texture-rich subtleties in both fashion and home decor. Trying to figure out how much contrast I want in my new kitchen facelift is really hard!

Hi E. Further to your query...Yes I do change things around between the S/S and A/W. e.g. I use lots of white bed linen when it is warmer and creams or taupe or grey when it is cold. I change over the cushion covers in the lounge room in the same way. In the bathrooms, I like white or pale blue towels in the S/S and taupe or deep rose in the A/W. When I set the dinner table I prefer white linen serviettes in S/S and taupe or deeper jewel colours in winter. Also I put lots of white flowers in vases in the summer but pick deeper or brighter colours in the cold. I have too many framed pieces to hang them all at once.....well I could hang them all at once but it would look too busy for my liking....so I prefer to change out some of the darker works for brighter and lighter pieces in the S/S. The furniture remains the same. The extra light in the day in the warmer months inspires me to lighten the accessories in our principally white house. Though small, these changes make the house look quite different and have a warming or cooling effect. Although not exclusive, my wardrobe is similar in many ways....lighter in S/S and darker in A/W.
