LOL - I didn't know that was a rule... But I grew up in South Florida, where we wore sandals literally all year round. We did not, however, wear white after labor day or before memorial day!

I saw you mention this elsewhere Jean and honestly, I didn't even realize this was an issue. I have never heard of this rule before and I am not sure I understand its reasoning. It seems very impractical and arbitrary, like no white after Labor Day. I have worn sandals a few times already and never gave it a second thought.

I know where you are coming from, Jean. I feel weird wearing sandals too early in the season too. But... I think weather should dictate our footwear choices more than the month! I wore sandals today because it was warm out and felt completely appropriate.

I'm from the East and now Chicago, so I've never had a lot of early warm weather. That said, it never occurred to me to wear sandals before May or June, but this year after seeing so many YLFers sporting them "early" in the year, I did too and I loved it!

Now, if only I could let go of the 'no white except between Memorial Day and Labor Day' rule I might be in good shape...

I've never heard of this rule, either. Still, I usually don't pull out my sandals until May at the earliest and definitely not until I've started the toenail painting season:)

As for the "no white before Memorial Day/after Labor Day" thing, well...I've always followed this. Of course, I'm also a native southern girl! I'm thinking about getting wild and breaking out the white jeans before late May though. Honestly, if you wait until Memorial Day for white denim, it's too hot to wear it any more...

Nope, my footwear choices are mostly based on weather. If it's warm enough for sandals (and my feet are sandal-worthy), I'll wear them.

Sandals when it's hot at which ever time of the year. No rules.

I live in San Francisco, and we are solidly fogged in with cold weather in July and August, with our warm season traditionally arriving for September-October. The spring months are a mixed bag and tend to ricochet between rainy days and warmer sunny ones. Because we're cheated out of most of our "summer" months, I feel free to bend the rules a little. We've had gorgeous weather the past few weekends, and I broke out my sandals early to enjoy it. I do adhere to the "no white before Memorial Day/after Labor Day rule" for the most part, but do bend it a little. For example, I have a white Kate Spade bag that I love to pieces and that makes so many outfits pop, so I do use it year-round (though admittedly, it's more of a winter white hue than a summertime optic white). I also broke out some beloved beige-hued linen pumps for a warm day a few weeks ago, and found myself wondering throughout the day if I was jumping the gun a little bit, as I understand linen and other summery fabrics are also not supposed to be worn before Memorial Day. So I guess it varies for me--the weather usually dictates with shoes and accessories; however, I just found a lovely pair of white linen pants at that 40% off Ann Taylor Loft sale this past Saturday, but would not feel comfortable wearing them till after May 31.

I definitely go with the weather for footwear. As for white before Memorial Day --- if its a sunny yet cool spring day, I wear white jeans. But today its snowing, and I wouldn't wear white jeans on a snowy day!

I am surprised so many people actually stick to the no white after labor day rule. Can I ask why? I'm not even sure what the origins of this are, but I always associated it with little old well-to-do ladies in the south which apparently is not the case.

I wonder if any other country has these unwritten rules regarding what colors are permitted to be worn based on national holidays. My guess is no :p

Things get hot in Atlanta pretty early so I wear sandals as the weather dictates. Funny thing, a lot of people down here wear flip-flops year round because of the weather. I call my husband the flip-flop police because he cannot stand that! He has his own sumptuary laws for flip-flop usage. Like never wear them, except at the beach and pool.

I also go with the weather as far as sandals are concerned. Here in Kansas it's not unusual to see sandals, shorts and flip flops all year round although it looks odd to me when it's below freezing.
As for white, I break that rule especially in the spring and have worn white jeans and my white jean jacket for weeks now. Too soon they will feel too hot. However, white seems too summery a color for fall.
Many are wearing linen now. I've purged my closet of that wrinkly fabric and refuse to buy it again.

I love sandals and will wear them if the weather cooperates and my feet look good--meaning that my toenails are painted. As far as white, I've already broken that rule because I've been wearing my white jeans ever since I bought them 5-6 weeks ago.

Obviously I don't have this rule because of where I'm from (Angie, I'm so glad you asked about when MD was- I had no idea!), so I'm another who lets the weather dictate. I tend to bring sandals out later in the season though, since I have naturally cold hands and feet. We've had some hot days here this year but I still haven't worn my sandals- it does feel a bit early, somehow.

Maya, I tried really hard to think of Canadian or British "rules" regarding dress and holidays, but I couldn't think of any! Unless "10 degrees is shorts weather" counts, but I think that might just be an Ontario thing, and in any case is only something teenaged boys do, and only after a long, cold winter.

Being Canadian, I never related to those fashion "rules" ever. If it was ever warm, you dressed appropriately.

The only fashion rule I ever knew about was never-ever wear jeans near my grandfather. But that was just our family!
