Well, knowing what I do of your wardrobe and love for shopping, this doesn't seem excessive at all. Mind you, you have both summer and fall mixed together though ....right? I have 500 million pairs of pants and jeans - and it's the ponte/legging category that trips me up and causes overload. I have tons of them and never seem to get rid of any. Jeans - you do have a lot of each category, but that's how you roll, so that's ok? You've reminded me I need to clean out my jeans collection and finally get rid of my very tired-looking and boring old Gap skinnies and girlfriends. I had to laugh at your 12 pairs of shorts though. I'm an avowed shorts wearer in summer - and wear them everyday - and think I might have 3 pair now after I did my recent summer pack-up. I finally tossed all of my now-too-short athletic running shorts too . Ha.

LOL yeah, to the shorts. If I’m honest with myself, only half of those look good enough for out-of-the-house wear. I’ll put them away for winter and see how sad they look to me in the spring.

See, and that’s another category I don’t have at all that a lot of women rely on — leggings and ponte pants. I have those plaid Kut ponte pants and that’s it for that category. I put the EF skirted leggings in my holding zone last year and they’re still there. Hmm.

Whew! I actually think I have fewer pairs of jeans than you (but am afraid to count) but make up for it in the many jeans skirts I own. As long as they still fit and I like it, they stay. Like mid-rise Gloria Vanderbilt straight leg jeans, lol. Be proud of your collection!

I did the exact thing on Sunday and took a photo of each pair on me. This exercise really helped me decide what I need going forward. A lot of my jeans are old, with many wears, and I've been slowly updating my collection. I have about 10 pair for going out and 10 pair for at home which is about right for me. Low rise pants were never very comfortable for me so that is what I'm replacing.

Bonnie, replacing old low rises has been an ongoing effort for me. I prefer mid-rise rather than high, but some high waists work ok on me (I shall never tuck though!). I would like to replace my old lighter wash bootcuts (I still have Gap bootcuts and the old Love Story flares from like five years ago, and those rises are quite low). So that is one possible replacement I could still make. Otherwise, my skinnies and straights have all been updated.

Fellow large wardrobe keeper and you are going to get anything but appreciation from me. Of all the things in the world to be concerned about, keeping too many clothes that you love and wear does not come on my radar. If you were constantly buying and discarding I would be concerned.

Waving hello Janet! Yes, I still have a large collection of jeans numbering somewhere between 30-40. I culled a large number of low rise jeans last year, but I kept everything else. I am going to cull all my cropped jeans once the weather gets colder. I prefer full length jeans—-so my numbers will go down, maybe by 8-10.

Yay, staysfit! My low rises are slowly being culled. I really like a mid rise and they’re not so easy to find these days, but I can do high if it’s not TOO high and I don’t tuck or semi-tuck.

You've totally got me on a mission for tomorrow -all of a sudden my standard jeans collection (anything older than this year, really, which is when I updated and jumped on a few trend bandwagons) is looking really old and dingy.  I wore a pair of skinnies that were probably at least 5 years old the other night and felt decidedly unfab Time to weed out the non-performers.  I was also mildly horrified at the number of faux leather pants and leggings I have - another staple look of mine that really needs a culling back to one pair at most.

Lisa, please post your results! I am always inspired by editing posts and such.

I need to set aside an afternoon to do the tops — maybe break it down into just the long-sleeved, fall/winter items: sweaters, tees, shirts, blouses. I have a lot, and I don’t wear them all. Some are seriously once-a-year items, but I still like them...I need to look at them all like I did the pants/jeans and see what patterns emerge.

Janet you have a great selection of jeans and it’s not crazy to own that many; jeans are a staple of wardrobe and like myself I am sure you will find a few more pairs you will buy in the future If you are looking for mid-rise Old Navy has some in stock.
Now you need to wear them all and show them off here
Love that organization you have by style, I just fold and stack and surprise myself to wear whatever I grab unless I need it for a specific style.

Good for you to do the full inventory. And completely agree that “size” is relative. If this is the core of your wardrobe, then of course you have multiple types/styles/cuts/washes/etc. (it’s why I have 4 navy blazers!)
