I like the skirt as is and I think it fits you really well. A short soak in a diluted bleach bath might help but I'm not sure it's necessary. Your cool fun shoes and jewelry are what is going to make this happen.
I think it looks like a classic wardrobe piece that fits well. I think the current jean skirts are either a bit longer or shorter so perhaps you're looker for a more current length. You could add a trendier top and shoes to make it work.
The fit is great, Janet, and I really like the idea of trying it with an edgier shoe and some other tops. Also, did you like Heather's last outfit here: http://youlookfab.com/2016/03/.....e-midwest/ I could see something similar (men's tie or bowtie nonchalantly tied and paired with a simple, drapey tank top) work with edgy footwear and your skirt too. Or same pieces (skirt and tank top) with a pile of your fab (pearl) necklaces.
I like approprio's suggestion to overdye it. A leather cuff, the free bird sandals and the t-shirt you have on would be great.
I really like the length on you, which is why I would hesitate to pick out the hem.
For summer ultracasual, I do like those sneakers with it, but maybe with a simpler top--a loose tank maybe? A ball cap if you're attending a sporting event?
The fit seems fine, length is good. And I'm guessing it must be comfortable or you wouldn't even try to style it - so, if that's the case, I think I'd just wear it a few more times, styled different ways, and see how you feel. I find that often I just need to "get over it" and wear something and if I still don't feel right, then I'll pass it on.
It's a perfectly great skirt, and I'm not just saying that because I have two like that hanging in my closet. It fits you well.
When I saw the photo, though, it reminded me of why I don't wear mine. It's not that there's anything wrong with the skirts, but it's easier to create more interesting/flattering silhouettes or more comfortable outfits with other garments.
I think it would look a lot better with shoes like the Freebirds. I personally have a poison eye for denim skirts but I really have a poison eye for denim skirts with sneakers. So take my opinion with a grain of salt. I say bleach, rip out the seems...it can't hurt. And if you're still not 100% feeling it...it just may need to go.
I had the same thought as Approprio: I would overdye it. And knowing how great you look in dark petrol blue-greens, I'd grab a bottle of pine green Rit dye, and go for it. I think you'd get a similar-but-moodier tone that would go beautifully with your rocker tees. Nothing wrong with the fit.
For your style, I would mainly keep this if it is to wear very RATE/edgy and textured-casual (leather, metals) and I see it as an alternative to shorts, so potentially not having some of the problems I have with shorts --skirts can be more forgiving. Especially if the top is one that looks good untucked. So I would play with it and if you can make even a couple of FFBO outfits with things you have, AND it feels good (not self-conscious) then it could be a good option.
