I like having a fashion project.

In February I overdyed some jeans red. This worked out well and started me thinking more about overdyed denim.

I wear jeans every day in winter and on many days in spring and autumn. Jeans are practical for my lifestyle because they are durable and washable. I like blue jeans but I do get tired of wearing them every day in winter. I don’t enjoy black, white or grey jeans, which tend to be the other available colour options. I decided I would like to DIY some more colours.

Pics 1-3. Red.

These are the original red jeans in some stylings I haven’t shown before.

Pics 4-8. Teal.

These jeans are in the same style as the red jeans but I this case I dyed them teal. Because teal is partly blue, the result is less dramatic than red. I have received lots of comments on these jeans. Lots of women are hungry for teal.

Pics 9-13. Plum.

Plum is my colour of the year. I think it’s “my black”. It has a similar deep, dramatic vibe to black but it suits me better and (in my opinion) looks richer than black when combined with the colours that I favour in winter: dark red, dark brown, eggplant, old gold, rust, tan, camel, dark olive. (That said, I don’t plan to give up black.)

The photos show a pair of (Weekday) jeans that I duplicated for this project. You can see the original blue colour in Finds. They are long, loose and puddling. A HEWI for me. They also have a nice graduation of colour which gives an ombré effect when overdyed. It’s hard to see in my photos but they are darker from the knee down.

I dyed this pair a mix of red and eggplant. The end colour is more purple than the red jeans but not as purple as straight eggplant. The look is also more conventional than the red jeans because they don’t have as dramatic a patina. (I wear these when I see my mum!)

Pic 14. Wine.

I fancied the idea of a non-blue denim skirt. I dyed this skirt with the plum jeans but, because the original colour was a much lighter blue, they came out more red than the jeans.

I really like the end result but I see this skirt as being more useful for spring or autumn than winter. Currently I’d have to wear it with tights, which is a bit of a hassle for every day wear.

I still have a couple of other colours/styles I’d like to try then this project is complete.
