Continued Stressing Over Event Outfit

Hi Ladies,

I am still trying to put together something for my fashion parade MC gig next week:)

To be completely honest I am yet to shop my closet properly. The idea I had for a peplum top over a pencil skirt has been thwarted as the top I had my eye on, while the fabric was great, the fit was awful:(

What do you think of these dresses? These are all Australian designer dresses, but not high end. #1 & 4 I love but I think I need waist definition.

1 is great. I also really like 2 and 3. You have impeccable style, Deborah. You shouldn't stress out. I've seen nothing but fabulous outfits from you. Go with your instincts--you have amazing sense of style!

I love #1 the best; the color and pattern seem very you as well. Are you sure it would not have enough waist definition? Would a belt help with that?

Otherwise, I also like #2, but not nearly as much as #1.

I really like the looks of #2 and #3. Do you have time to buy, take home, try with different accessories etc. and return if necessary?

Like you, I also like #1 and #4, but I once heard Angie mentioning something about borders on hemlines (a long time ago, in reference to a wrap dress I was considering) in that they can sometimes chop up the leg line. Not sure these two have an actual border in the same way as the wrap dress I was considering did (solid black border in that case), but still - seeing the borders across the neckline and the leg line gives me pause. That said, I am definitely *not* an expert on these things so take this with a huge grain of salt. Of the two, I like #1 best and can see you in that fab blue with black ....it would look amazing on you. I also like that it has a bit of a 'mod' vibe...yes, it's definitely a contender!

Hmm...not much help, am I? Can you try #1 through #3? As in buy and try at home before deciding?

I'm not certain about the sleeves on #3, but I still love that peplum shape, so if I were you, I'd want to at least try it out.

ETA: I'd put #1 as top contender.

I have been doing burlesque and cabaret emceeing for a year and a half, so here is my two cents.

Go with #3. Here's why:

* It's vivid and will show up against most colors of background, and it will also show up well in a large open space.
* It's simple but chic.
* It's a bit modest - which gives you some authority as the emcee, I have found.
* People naturally pay more attention to somebody wearing red.
* Your role, as an emcee, is as a representative of the event...the spirit of it, as it were...you will be creating the headspace for the audience. The other dresses are all lovely dresses and would be great for dinners out, weddings, brunches, etc. BUT I do not think they have as much presence as the red dress.

The #1 female emcee mistake is wearing black as a default. Wearing black on a stage with a backdrop, you don't stand out - and many stage backdrops are black themselves, so a black outfit turns you into a floating head!!! Small or subtle patterns are also not great on a stage/podium. For your event, big patterns or pure color are the way to go.

Hi Deborah, I'm not sure if this is helpful but can you imagine the best possible outfit you could wear? Including colour, shape fit etc. Then work back from there. If I were MCing at this sort of event I would go for fit & quality - something that made me feel really me - I wouldn't be testing a new outfit unless I was 100% sure of it. I'm sure it will come together for you.

Emily, your experience is so helpful.

The reason I am looking at new dresses is because my special occasion dresses are all pretty much black and I was trying to get away from the black in part because of the reasons Emily mentioned. And my preference is for solids, not patterns as I don't want my outfit to be distracting.

I like #1 and #5. #1 for color and pattern, maybe add a wide belt for more waist definition. #5 is very waist defining and love the dots! #2 is good too, the pattern and definite shaping quality

Deb. all great but I lean towards #1.
It looks like something I can imagine you wearing and the cobalt is such a Spring trend here in Aus. It also seems to have some shaping at the waist in the pic.
I also like #2 but not convinced re. the pattern.
#4 looks very dramatic but could either be FAB or not so fab I.R.L.
Least fav is #3.

Thanks Lyn. I like the idea of 3 but would rather invest in a top than a dress in case the peplum trend is over before it starts:) I am at work now playing on line looking for some things I can go and try on tomorrow on my day off:) #1 is Jane Lamerton but my Myer doesn't think they have it in store:(

Lyn you are so sweet! I am going to pop into my Myer tomorrow as the SA couldn't be absolutely sure she didn't have it but she was lovely:) I could order on line but need to check the delivery.

I am becoming more and more confused I was close to settling for a lovely faux wrap dress I already own but now I am questioning black?? I have a meeting tonight and I think I will have a quiet word with our Chairperson and our creative director person and just check if they have a preference, or direction on what they think will be suitable.

I don't see black as an issue for this role- there will be plenty of colour on the models I am sure, and black is quite M.C.ish. I know you will add some sort of stylish accent in your accessories if you go down this path.
How about you gather together your options, take pics and get feedback from Angie? Don't worry, I am sure things will fall into place by next week.

Thought I would give you an update. I met with the creative director of the event tonight who has encouraged me to wear black! He asked me what color I was comfortable wearing and he said black will be great against the red and white:). I can accessorize with a bit of color. So now it's just a matter of which black dress in my closet (as there are a few). I am trying to discipline myself and not go out and buy a new one
