Consignment Swooshy Skirt

I did a little thrifting recently and found this fun, beige Uniqlo swooshy cotton, midi- length skirt complete with pockets no less. Styled it with a thrifted belt and sandals too.

They have a few cool consignment stores in this trendy part of town that I enjoy checking out because it seems there's always some fun, fashionable pieces to discover there.

These stores are pretty particular on what they'll accept and everything must be cleaned first. They also steam most items before putting them out on the floor. Prices are darn reasonable too.

You look like an ad for the Peterman catalogue and I mean that in the best possible way. Classic, intrepid, stylish!

The thrifting near me is very blah, and I also have a low tolerance for the stores themselves. There is generally so much awful stuff to sift through to find the rare gem. There was a very appealing high end consignment store at one of the nearby malls, but it closed last year. Now I take my nephews (who are all about thrifting) to the city Value Village stores. They are happy, and I sit and read on my phone. I feel like the men's clothing is much nicer and better quality.

I have bought used items on eBay and been very happy with them - which is sort of thrifting. Coats in particular.

Best outfit I've seen you post, Dee! I love the polish of the tucked top, and how the outfit is completed with a cognac complement! Classic AND on trend in that utility-vibe way. NICELY DONE

To answer your question: generally, I do not buy consignment. I have purchased secondhand on TRR occasionally though. But only new, with tags. Like this skirt!

What a great skirt on you ! I rarely buy second-hand . I’ve had more failures than successes with those pieces so unless it’s something super obviously a hit , I’m not into it . Great if you have the time , but I don’t .

Great skirt! Love the whole look too.
No good thrift stores near by and the size that I need is rarely there.
I have better luck with Marshall's and sometimes with Ross.

What a fab outfit. Very chic and urban adventure-ready. The skirt is a great find, and I love how the belt, bag, and sandals complement each other. I'm not a consignment shopper, so I admire those who do find gems and put together cool looks with them.

I haven’t been since before the pandemic but I intend to go soon. Several closed down permanently as a result of Covid. By me most of them are either very high end or pretty low end.

Fabulous skirt and I love the styling of it! I live in an area that has three great consignment stores plus several vintage and thrift shops. I usually have pretty good luck with all of them as a seller and a buyer. The overwhelming majority of my wardrobe is second-hand, whether B & M or through online platforms like TRR, Poshmark and eBay.

I’m not a second hand shopper. I generally shop only from a few places where my chances of buying an item are decent. I tried a few thrift and consignment stores but unsuccessfully.

Roberta, haha I didn’t know Peterman catalogues were a real thing, I thought it was just something the Seinfeld show made up.

I certainly get that consignment/thrift stores aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. It can be hit or miss for items, and the some of these places are total chaos to go through. I’m fortunate that these particular consignment stores are really clean and very well curated.

Great find! Love the pretty cut and the fact it is utility at the same time. You styled it perfectly, too.

I go to consignment stores whenever I travel, as there are none in my area. I do go to thrift shops often, and at least half my wardrobe is thrifted. I'm one of those people who doesn't mind if the store is chaotic and requires digging to find the treasures. I am picky about what I actually take home, though.

I love the shape of this skirt on you. It's 90s in the best way! The whole outfit is crisp, classic, yet completely on trend. Fab!

I used to thrift but don't any more, mainly because the stores in my area are not likely to yield much of interest. But I do shop consignment. A few pieces I've found at consignment shops:

A DVF silk and cotton cardigan, new with tags, unworn.
A Paul Smith summer blazer (cotton/ linen).
Judith and Charles pea coat (no longer in my wardrobe but well worn for years before I passed it on).
A fun fake "Max Mara" "snow queen" dressy coat.
A Pink Tartan blazer with bell sleeves (now retired but not before a wore it lots.)
A Biba kimono.

I thrift a lot. I enjoy it. I live in a small town in an area with many second homes. There are several thrift stores and I frequent most of them.
My most recent find was a black jersey silk tank, grey/ black stripe l/s tee and grey pants by Eileen Fisher. I like oversized fluid fits and I sew, so I can usually alter something that I find if it does not quite fit. I also have good luck with eBay/ Poshmark

Wonderful find! In a very chic way it’s giving me a smart casual old-fashioned archaeologist vibe.

I don’t often find anything in my size range AND where the fit and style are right with consignment. That being said, in the past couple years I discovered exactly ONE store in my region that specializes in plus size consignments and is excellent, but it’s far enough away that I’ll only be an occasional visitor unless I see a treasure on their online stock (which I’ve done recently in a brand that I already knew would fit me.)

Great skirt and outfit! Almost everything I own and wear is second hand. The thrift stores near me, and I think everywhere, are becoming stuffed with SHEIN and the like but there are still treasures to be found. Thrift stores, second hand stores, consignment, online - you name it, I'll shop there. I can clean and steam myself at home .

I love this skirt on you, that is a wonderful find. I buy a few things from a consignment store which stocks designer pieces in good condition. All of these items have been great acquisitions. The black coat is a new acquisition, so time will tell how good that one will be, but I have high hopes it will be a workhorse.

Great find! Our consignment shops have a lot of stuff from the outlet mall (our only retail aside from boutiques), and a lot is pretty junior-ish (crop tops, short dresses). But hope springs eternal, and sometimes I score decent pieces.

Love the thrifting adventure! That beige Uniqlo find sounds like a gem. I enjoy consignment shopping too. In my area, thrift stores have a mix of vintage treasures and modern gems. The prices are always a pleasant surprise. Happy hunting! ️

I haven’t bought anything on consignment but I do have a couple of charity shops locally that I trawl through when I’m donating something. It’s hit and miss but I have scored some items that I really enjoy. This jacket and scarf are my faves.

I buy consignment but not as much thrift shop these days. The thrift shops are small and don't have the best prices. I lost my best thrift companion to Covid and feel sad thrifting without her. I have heard that thrifting is worth it in some other towns, so I plan to take a day and try that. You have had great luck. Be picky and try everything on. During Covid you could not do that.

Runcarla I absolutely love the idea of thrift/consignment shopping while on trips, such an interesting and enjoyable way to perhaps find something really unique. I remember going to a great spot in Princeton N.J., right across from the university, lots of great finds there.

I buy a lot from either charity shops or consignment shops. Over half my wardrobe would be second hand. I don't tend to buy jeans second hand or workout wear.

I like going into them a few times a year. I prefer thrift stores to consignment stores as I find the prices in the latter still a bit high often. I can get better prices for good mid-range or “bridge” brands ( thanks to April for that term) in the sales at my favourite boutique. I don’t spend time trawling online sites because I am trying to reduce the number of items I buy.
My most recent thrift purchases were last year- a top with pretty colours for $4, really nice cream summer pants for $5, and a yellow dress $7 for the Haldi (turmeric) ceremony for the Hindu wedding I am attending soon. Also last winter a lovely soft wool blazer/skirt combo for $15. I didn’t fit the skirt but my schoolteacher daughter did!
Your new skirt looks wonderful on you. Great with those sandals.

The skirt is smashing, what a find! I love the styling.
I shop at thrift stores, mainly vintage jewelry and occassionaly a bag or a scarf. I used to be able to find some nice clothing items, but the chances are much slimmer now when thriftning has become a main stream popular activity. Some thrift shops have renovated and rearrange the entire shop to look like a regular retail store or a department store, it looks more clinical than before, everything is super organized, prices are a lot higher and the choice of interesting items is rather limited, it is possible to make a score occasionaly, though, But I would say the whole experience is less fun than it used to be, I miss the hunt in the somewhat chaotic places full of interesting charming items. The thriftshop I am thinking about is rather practical and selling a lot of rather new pieces from for example h&m or other chains.

Katerina your right about thrifting becoming more mainstream now, for better or worse. I do enjoy the hunt myself and prices have definitely gone up, although still reasonable but I’m not a fan of chaos, funky smells or throw away fashion.
