Rosemerin:Same here! I finally found my role model. I feel like I made it in life because there's finally a Barbie version of me, LOL! Barbie will have hard time integrating to the culture with that outfit unfortunately.

Louise: I feel like touching a computer is enough to be labeled geek as a women. I often hear "oh so you're a geek" when I tell someone what I do. An ex gave me a coffee mug that says geek thinking it's funny. (Ok... it's a little funny... maybe...) I passed the mug on to a mathematician girlfriend.

Yay, computer engineer Barbie! I love that Mattel are finally embracing the entry of women into technology and science. Saying that, those sparkly leggings are a fashion crime.

I've also been labelled as a nerd as I play computer games, embrace new technology and watch sci-fi.

That is so funny and cute, and really a great thing for little girls to know that they can be anything they want to be. Barbie has changed alot since I was a little girl and had a Barbie and her little sister Skipper.

I am also a geek... IT Operations Manager to be exact. I don't mind being called geek, esp. when the comment comes in context of surprise that I am a geek, and stylish at the same time

I read about it, too! My first reaction was quite skeptical - all the pink and the reference to programming a newborn monitor in the press release. But I also realize that an engineer profession doesn't lend itself easily to pretend play - not like doctor, for example.
Maybe because I am an accidental software engineer, but I don't really like being labeled a geek. Recently I got a funny compliment from my hairdresser - he said, "You dress very nice for a geek". I guess the expectations are low, but I do try to dress trendier for haircuts to avoid getting something ultra-conservative

Do you think the term geek is ridiculously outdated now? My two year old is able to navigate the mrmen website to print a picture to colour. If you are not a geek you will be left behind given the advances in technology.

LOP, my barbie when I was younger wore a pink Chanel style suit and her accessories were a filo fax and a briefcase. I also had a doll resplendent in ski wear. I was never interested in the princess or bride doll! I'm happy Barbie are continuing to evolve the doll.

actually I do have a friend in computer science whose favorite color is pink and she dresses very very close to this. I do admit that she's way an outlier though

As for being a geek - I consider that a good thing. When I was in CS, I used to call myself a geek. I still call myself a geek in my new field. To me it means someone who has taken the time to gain expertise and go deep in something. And there are some awfully geeky things I do every once in a while - e.g. when I saw a car's license plate that said excelnt (meaning excellent), my first read of it was the guy must work at Microsoft and has been working on Excel and Windows NT!

That's funny, Sihaya. I wouldn't be surprised if someone at Microsoft had a license plate with that meaning, and I've seen enough of those. By your definition, though, Angie would be a geek, and I don't think it would occur to anyone

Not necessarily! One of my coworkers is a bluetooth-using (wielding?) graphic design geek. He is incredibly geeky actually--one of the geekiest people I know. I wonder if I should be posting this publicly...

I love the binary code shirt though. I used to have a binary code blanket that I am suddenly very nostalgic for. Obviously I have no shame about being a geek or I wouldn't have just told you that.

I'm just grateful to see Barbie with something (slightly?) more modest on her lower half! Though I didn't pay attention to hemlines when I played with them as a little girl. It's funny how my perspective has changed!
I don't really think of "geek" as a bad thing anymore. When I was younger it seemed to have more of a negative meaning but now it seems people use it proudly as a badge of honor to say they know a lot about something in the sense that they are passionate about it. But I suppose if I were speaking of my profession then I would prefer engineer over geek!

I don't see myself as awkward. I still think #2 can be generalized to other professions and as my husband is so fond of reminding me, I have quoted myself as a geek on the front page of USA Today. So there's no going back, I might as well glorify it

I took a "geek, nerd, or dork" test back when taking online tests was a legitimate way to spend time...and I was a nerd by a longshot, distantly followed by geek and dork which I think were tied. Nerds are regarded as those who are interested in academia and intellectual pursuits, geeks are those who have quirky obsessions that they pursue relentlessly (whether it be Star Wars or programming), and dorks are socially awkward and clumsy.

Here's the test. I am still a "pure nerd." No surprises there.

Geek is something I use to indicate someone is overdoing it. I generally use it as a joke.

I don't care what people call me anyway, but the reason why I don't prefer being called a geek after I say what I do is that it categorizes me based on what I do where as it is only a part of my identity, not all of it. It generally goes like this:

Me: I'm a computer specialist...
He/She: Really! So you're a geek... you don't look like a geek.... etc...
Me: Well we geeks come in all kinds of shapes and sizes...
