Nancy, I'm blonde(+grey eyes) and one of my good neutrals is exactly the dreaded taupe as bookends my hair well-so I use it every time I can. No, not really blocked near my face, but in my footwear(as you alos did here:-)), bags and my few prints.
BUT I love black, too. It's slimming:-) and always makes a contrast and a statement-still I don't really like it near my face-or blocked with a bright clear color, it just doesn't suit my complexion.
Then I try to use it on my lower half, but then combined with a print which has some blacks in it on my upper half. Or blocked with a brighter colour, but wearing a black cargo vest, or a printed scarf...
Also, I have some printed pencils whith blacks in them, which also look good with a top of a colour picked out from the print, and a black blazer/vest and opaques and black footwear (for winter).
AND, I also wear chock browns a lot(and navy) wich are looking better then black nearby my face.
You don't have to wear all those colors, pick up a few, and make them work somehow with your neutrals. Fall and winter is not quite the best time for the brights-I can understand your feeling, but comming spring you can dig them out again, and have fun with all!:-)

I'm just replying quickly now as this was a quick visit, but I'll reply in depth later

I was told almost a year ago that I am a bright spring. Previously, I'd always believed and was told by several other stylists that I am a version of Summer (there is still some debate between true summer and soft summer, but I choose to work within that range anyway - it's not a big deal to me).

At first I found it quite confusing - not just because the colours were "new" to me, but also because they were so different to what I was used to , and what I believed to work for me.

I'll come back later with some suggestions of colour combinations to try, and things that worked for me to try to "ease" into the new colour palette. (I've since dismissed it though, as I am quite sure I'm summer, so I'm back to wearing those colours - mostly at least!!)

I don't know if this is of any help, but I am just another person who still doesn't know what my best colours are. But the thing is, I am not worried about that. I just wear the colours and combinations I like and so far, I have never looked in the mirror and said Horror! (I admit there is a possibility I am too optimistic about this ...).

Thanks for the continued thread of great ideas, ladies. I do think I have to just relax and let this thing evolve naturally to some extent. I do realize that I don't have to wear all brights....and I most likely never will.....but I think the color analysis was spot on. I really do look better in brights. My face lights up and I look younger and healthier. And as I get older, why wouldn't I want to look better if possible? Check out the photos below. #1 is the neutral outfit I wore to teach this a.m, which felt very natural and very "me," whereas #2 and #3 are two bright sweaters I threw on just after I snapped #1. There was no makeup change (I didn't even comb my hair!), but you can see how much brighter my face looks in #2-3.

Joy, your suggestion of adding a pop of white is a great one. I'm going to try that going forward. I'm also eager to check out light grey and explore my other neutrals.

Florence, scarves may indeed be the best quick fix.

Deborah and Lyn, excellent advice on how to take my analysis and mix it with my own preferences to find the colors that work best for me.

Shevia, Jeanie, Ariadne, Niefern, thanks for the support and kind words.

Denise, I hear you on neutrals/color fear. I've never been a fan of brights, never wanted my clothes to announce me so loudly that they take center stage. Despite my analysis, I just don't see myself in head-to-toe color.

Annaj, I appreciate your comments. I do think the analysis was correct. I'm just struggling with how to make my neutral soul come to grips with this new information. I don't want to throw my style out the window on the basis of this analysis...but it is definitely going to "color" (ha!) my decisions going forward. I am eager to hear more of your experience as a spring. Please share!

Nancy, I started to post again yesterday (after you posted on your neutrals in response to my question) and didn't have enough time. I hope you'll forgive me for jumping in again!

I am super excited for you and this shift in your colors because I know the end result will be that you will even more AMAZING than you already look (lily? gilded! and even more beautiful than before.). I can see it already in the pictures that you've posted with the bright colors.

I can imagine why you are feeling a little out of your comfort zone though. This is a big change. I also noticed that all of the neutrals you listed for me are high contrast neutrals with your brights. You've been very comfortably wearing your lovely muted, tonal, low contrast colors for years. Expecting that you'll suddenly be able to leap into wearing bright, high contrast outfits is too much. Be gentle with yourself as you make the change.
Honestly? I would use black and white and navy and the other neutrals that you listed. But if I were you, before I invested in developing those neutrals, I would go straight on, full speed ahead for a brown neutral on your color chart. I looked at a sample chart and it looks like there are a ton of brown neutrals (and even an olive in there!). You understand and feel comfortable with brown neutrals. Why not go with one of the camels, taupes or chocolates in your color palette so that you can capitalize on what you know, love and feel comfortable with (and probably already own)?

You've already made a huge change incorporating the new brights into your wardrobe. My gut just tells me that you will be much happier and more comfortable and confident if you retain something of your old style as you add in those brights.

For what it's worth...just out of curoisity, I looked at Ruth's link (Bing images) and substituted my own palette, Deep WInter. And the yield I got was almost as coulourful as yours--reams of jewel tones--all arrayed in bunches--with here and there a black or dark navy outfit. Nothing at ALL like the proportions I see when I open my closet door--lots of black white, and navy, with hits of red and cobalt and rarely emerald. If you're a neutrals-at-heart girl, choose from among all those brights the ones that make your heart sing--and splice them with your neutrals.

I think each individual should customize the colors in her seasonal palette to suit her coloring (there are ranges of hair, skin and eye colors even within each season) and personality.

When I look at the soft autumn polyvores online, I see some color combos that have my name written all over them so to speak, and others that I simply wouldn't wear. That doesn't mean the color palette doesn't work for me. It just means I combine my colors in a different way.

I hope this helps! I've struggled with this for many years, and think I'm finally getting a grip on what looks best on me. I understand your frustration, Nancy.
