Coat for Topping off the Long Cardi over Leggings or Pants Look?

I love the long cardi looks. However, I own no winter coats that are as long as this. I'm curious, would you fold it up so it doesn't hang below or let it hang below the hem of the coat?

Tough call. This was the reason why my maxi cardi got much less wear than anticipated. I didn't even consider how the length would work under winter wear (lesson learned!), and couldn't stand how the hem peeped out, regardless of the length of cut of the coat. Following for ideas.

Me, too, because of my new gilet.

My long cardis are not quite that long so they work under my puffer coat (though not under my other winter coats). But now I think I need a longer coat as well!!

That's a great question; I always feel awkward if my cardigan shows below the bottom of my coat. I have a puffer coat which is fortunately long enough to cover my long cardigans.

Long cardigans were my main reason for wanting a longer trench coat, which I bought last year. It works really well. It turns out my MycraPac coat covers most of my long cardigans, too (like the Find, but mine is mauve). I'm not too picky about dresses hanging out below coats, but long cardigans hanging out too much did bug me for some reason. I can live with a little bit of length difference, if need be, though.

eta: I have worn my leather moto jacket over a long cardigan, too.

A slight overhang does not bother me if the coat is left open. The cardi looks like an intentional layer and can add some interest. If the coat is closed and there is an overhang I think it can look a bit messy, like a slip showing. I think if I needed to close my coat I would try to wrap the maxi cardi around me first - so that there is no break in the hem at the front. That way when you close the coat it looks more finished - like wearing a slightly longer dress or skirt under a coat. But that would only work if the coat has a belt.

Firecracker, even those you linked don't seem like they would cover the longer cardigans that I'm being drawn to (or the long vest I already own) which is a bummer (glad they cover yours, though).

Suz, let us know if you find a great long coat!

Brooklyn, I think you are right that the overhang is not as offensive if the coat is left open. But, trouble is, I run cold so that is not going to work most of the time for me.

I guess that takes me back to hiking the sweater up underneath my coat!

What a great question. I bought a long cardigan from Banana Republic last year and could never figure out how to wear a winter coat without the ends of the cardigan hanging out. Thus the cardigan didn't get worn as much I would have liked.

I hate my sweater hanging longer than my coat, but if I am just going to/from work I live with it. If I will be wearing it a while, like shopping, then I try to tuck it up or don't wear the longer sweater. Luckily not too many of my sweaters are that long but I am eyeing some of these from yesterday's post so it could be an issue.

If it is thinner, I just tuck or wrap it. If it is thicker, I often just take it with me in a bag and put it on when I get to work or take the coat off and carry it if I'm shopping.

I also struggle with mismatching lengths. Ideally the coat would be the longest layer and everything would tuck neatly inside. If the sweater layer is minimally longer I think it's workable and not a big deal, But if it's significant, I think I might carry the long cardigan in a tote and then put it on when I got to my destination. I know that in some ways that overcomplicates things, but I'd rather have a sleeker traveling look and an extra bag than the strangeness of the long sweater tail. (I have the same issue with blazers that don't fit well under coats, and I carry them separately if I need to also).

@Angie - I'm confused. Is the Pendleton cape to be worn over the cardi? It looks too short to cover it all.

This is why I don't wear my long cardigans in winter - at least out of the house. I also - and this is just my opinion and to my eye only - don't find long coats very modern and attractive. They remind me of how we wore our coats in the 80's - huge long swathes of wool which looked so ridiculous. I am fully accepting of the fact that my longer pieces (and I just bought a new sleeveless long knit vest the other day) won't be worn past , say , late October. That's ok with me
