Thank you for your help Angie! I am seriously tempted to order some super cheap ones from F21 right now and give it a try!

Excellent, Tanya! I'm pretty sure you'll make it work.

I went ahead and ordered two pairs from F21: a black one that is about clamdigger length ( as Maya suggested) and a charcoal one that's mid calf ( like you suggest Angie). I am technically breaking my shopping ban but they wore $15 total so hopefully that doesn't count I really hope they will work for me and I will like the look. If not, I will delegate them to sleepwear.

I'm on the lookout now for leggings and tunics. How short should the top be?

Well I guess I am not sporting it, since you did ask that. I have flirted with the idea of wearing leggings with a short slip dress from the 90's.

I am trying to pick carefully which styles I adopt, since I have a fairly limited budget. I only want to buy enough clothes so I have enough clean suitable, clothes to wear and don't want clothes that will be out of fashion but not worn out.

I do remember your original posts very well, Angie! Since you first posted about them I have wanted to try this look, but I have been put off because of my big calves. I would love to wear this during the hot hot days of LA summers. It seems like it would be cooler than jeans.

What is the best shoe to wear with this look? A flat? A wedge? Should the shoe be black or a lighter color?

Tara, I think either flats or wedges will work, just try one that you would wear with skirts or clamdiggers. And there is no reason to limit yourself to black shoes!

I'm intrigued. I tried wearing leggings once last summer but I wasn't sure if it worked so I didn't follow up on it. I would appreciate if you could give me your opinions. Is this an acceptable leggings look?

Thank you!

I keep thinking I'm too old for this look, but hmmm... maybe? For a casual instead-of-jeans look, I could see it working. I have a friend who looks great in leggings and short dresses, but always considered it "her" look. This weekend I'll play around with what I have and you guys can help me decide.

Great outfit! LOVE the red of the dress and how you put the whole look together.

I wonder if it would look even better if the leggings were pulled up higher so you show more of your calves. That's often the most flattering length. I pull mine up to about the point where the calf curve starts. You could experiment with different lengths in the mirror to check.

I would love to try, they look so cute on others. Unfortunately, I get bad flashbacks of the late '80's or early '90's of myself in stirrup pants & oversize denim shirts (LOL) when I think about them! I'm probably more of a pear or curvy pear maybe & am more self conscious on my lower 1/2 so I'm not sure if I could pull it off. It would be so fun to try though! I have friends that say my mental image of my body is different than it really is though so who knows - I'm trying to reconcile the 2 but I really think my mental image is right! Oops....digressing...

Ok, I have been wanting to try this for so long, but kept thinking I might be too old for the look. This thread has pushed me over the edge. I already have a dress I wanted to try with leggings - now I'll go and get some today and post some pics over the weekend!

Loving this look and can't wait 'till it's warm enough here to try it out again! I need to up my dress options, especially ones that I can wear in pregnancy.

You will look great in the leggings look, Tanya. Keep us posted. I hope you try them too, Inge.

Tara! I absolutely see you in leggings and Antje has offered super footwear options. You have the green light on black shoes too. Aren’t I nice :0)

Leggings were extremely popular in HK last year and I saw lasses wear them in creative ways. I think that they have become a mainstream basic. There are loads of women in the fashion industry sporting them with uber smart dresses to tone down the dressiness of the dress. The effect is glorious. I love the edge.

Bella, a sweet little leggings look! You could pull those leggings up a little more too (so that you show more of your calf).

Sinead you are NOT too old. I have a client in her late 50’s who looks incredible in leggings. I’m all for the look and can’t wait to start sporting it again once it warms up.

Ellen, you'll look adorable in maternity leggings.

Bella - I love your leggings look! You inspired me to play around!

bella, SO CUTE! i think it would be better if it were a smidge shorter, as angie says. but incredible, nonetheless. i may have to play around more with the look!

Another reason why have avoided the leggings look is because of my body type. Being an inverted triangle (and not a skinny, supermodel one), I feel like leggings (and likewise skinny jeans), just emphasizes how thin my lower half is compared to the upper half. When I sported leggings in college, I wore them with hiking boots which sort of gave me something to balance it out. I feel like knee-high boots sort of accomplishes this with skinnies tucked in. However, leggings with a tunic or dress worn with ballet flats or sandals would just give me the ice-cream cone effect. Angie, what do you think about dressing my body type in leggings?

I wore ankle length leggings with ballet flats and skirt this week. I liked it! The day was too cool for bare legs and seemed too warm (and my activities were too casual) for my boots. I didn't even think of trying the leggings calf-length, but will try it.

I was just in New York and saw a lot of women there wearing leggings with shorter tops/tunics - meaning tops that ended at the top of the thigh or even higher. To me this seemed too short. What is the right length? How do you know if it's too short or too long?
