I just wanted to give a little plug for this dress before the sale ends. I happened upon it when making a return a few days ago, and tried it on for grins.

It was *so close* to working for me. TTS, soft, comfortable, and easy to wear -- great for a casual style dress. Nice length. The only sticking point for me, quite literally, was the hips -- sadly, mine are just a smidge too big for this dress. Sizing up would have made it too big all over. If you're a bit straighter through that part of the body, this dress may be a winner for you.

I'll just be sitting over here cursing my genetics and my love for bread and sweets.

Bummer. I have the same problem with dresses.

I have this Vince one. It has plenty of hip room! It’s a bit more grunge than the Caslon shirt dress though. I got mine at Nordstrom where it is sold out (as at shopbop in the find) but I’m pretty sure it’s still available elsewhere on the internet (on sale no less). TTS, maybe a little large but the wrap makes it adjustable. I shortened the armholes on mine.

Hmm. I took a one-day class to reintroduce myself to machine sewing (I learned way back in the dark ages of junior high school). I'd be so tempted to find a pattern and make something like this.

Thanks Lisa and Suz - I like the colours on my better but I like that the Caslon one has full length sleeves - I would have preferred that.

I'm still getting used to wearing a dress that has waist shaping but is loose-ish at the waist (as opposed to shift, sack and cocoon dresses) - A photo taken by someone else looked rather unflattering, but it I think it probably looks better with movement and with a jacket over the top.

And Janet - I'm afraid I like my sweet things too - and even bread sometimes (I recently splurged on some GF bread that was quite decent as opposed to the normal forgettable stuff!)

Haha, thanks Angie and smittie. I jest, as I am grateful for nearly everything my parents passed along to me, for better or for worse (although I could do without the likelihood of heart disease). Big hips are just an inconvenience.

Anne, I think dresses like you describe — shaped through the waist but not tightly fitted — can be some of the most universally flattering. And sadly seem to be more rare than dresses on the ends of the fitted vs sack spectrum. That’s why I’m so bummed when something promising like this is so close!

As I missed out on the 1901 shirtdress I just put this in my cart. Thanks Janet and Angie, it comes in petite so very happy about that. Also the green has yellow accent colors so it will go perfectly with my recent yellow accessory obsession.

I have a similar sleeveless gingham dress from Madewell that I purchased last year. It’s an easy dress to wear because it’s forgiving of the midsection. I wore it repeatedly after my umbilical hernia surgery repair in June. It worked well over a swollen belly. I strongly debated the red plaid version but my closet is full and I am not convinced that this would be better than anything else I already own.

I love the red. And I know it's post-NAS, but even at full price it feels like a steal. I may give it a try - it feels like a cozy, forgiving piece for the fall.

I lemming'd! I ordered the dress in a M petite, but It's not a great fit as is. I'm short but busty and so the gathering on the M petite appears more like an empire waist and doesn't sit at my natural waist. Which do you think is my best bet to fix the fit: a L petite or regular M?

Narrow and Full Hips:
Janet, you and I have the same Anthropologie skirt from last year's catalog. I took it with me on a recent vaca with my daughter in law. I have slimmer hips than she does. I told her to try my skirt on and voila--she looked 10x better in it than I do. So she now has a new skirt! I was amazed at the difference. I thought I looked okay in it but once I saw how she rocked it, I knew it was made for her. She loves it! my point--narrow hips may fit into the dress above but fuller hips are truly a plus and the clothes makers need to understand that women need options. We are not all size 2 nor have we ever been! I saw in the Nordie's photos of a recent item I was considering a model that looked so thin, she looked ill. That doesn't sell products.

CJ, that's so funny about your skirt! Too bad you lost a skirt, but I'm 100% with you -- I'd rather give my "ok" stuff to someone who looks fantastic in it!

I've never considered my wide hips as an asset -- even at my thinnest, they tend to make fits challenging. But I realize the grass is often greener and we all have fit challenges!
