I love the idea of them, and how they look on other people, but I can only wear the silkier version that has more give and flow. I only wear them in warmer weather though.

I've never liked them for myself, they just seem too masculine on my body, and I don't trust buttons! But, they look great on many people and are classic and versatile. So, no reason to not wear them if you enjoy them!

Button-up shirts are classics. They may not be trending, but they are not outdated either. They can successfully be worn in all the ways you have described, bridgie--depending on the wearer's style, figure, personality and confidence.

As for myself:. Most parts of my body are a bit long. I am relatively slim, but also curvy, with a considerable difference between my waist width and my hip width. So if I wear a shirt as a top, it has be fitted, never boxy, and it must look fine when worn untucked, as this is how I wear my tops in most cases. The fabric must neither be too stiff nor too loose, and the collar has to look ok when worn open and perhaps popped up.

When wearing a button-up as a top, I prefer to leave a few buttons un-buttoned. (Love relaxed elegant looks.) However, this will create a V-neck, and on me (unlike on many--perhaps most--other women), V-necks generally don't look great, so to soften the lines and fill the gap, I'll always wear a scarf or a necklace.

I recently purged most of my standard-length button-up shirts, as they didn't meet the criteria mentioned above, and as I often prefer to wear other kinds of tops, like pullovers or soft blouses. However, the "right" button-up can look so crisp and sharp--and effectively dress up a pair of jeans as well as dress down a long or glamorous skirt!--so I would definitely be interested in a couple of new ones, preferably icy white and a pastel.

In summer, I love to wear LONG, ROOMY, FLOWING shirts as toppers over sleeveless summer dresses, beachwear, lace singlets, tees, tank tops, etc.

Not all button down shirts are created equally a white shirt is an essential item in my wardrobe. I wear boyfriend style, oversized or boxy and cropped. I only have one fitted and wear it exclusively with a loose cardigan.
I agree, the fitted ones don’t look current unless paired with trendy jeans. I stay away from them, too difficult to find a right fit and to style. I look for more of the contemporary cut, usually from COS.

shevia, I think the silkier shirts are more your style. And I think you would look very nice in them.

suntiger, your reasons for not wearing button-up are a little different but very valid. Since you mention it I (and I bet most people here) have had problems with malfunctioning buttons. Sometimes button-holes are too large or too small, and I have actually buttoned a top incorrectly, and had to re-do it all. Would be interested in hearing your reasons.

The Cat, you are another YLF member who has it all sorted. The white and blue shirt would be very nice for you. My two newest ones are cream buffalo plaid and a lemon yellow.

Irina, So true - all button downs are not created equally! I think the boxy ones are easier to wear, but I think the more fitted are slimming on me.
However with that said I have two fitted ones ready to purge after buying the cream and yellow boxy ones. Go figure. I will add, the two fitted ones I am purging are well worn and look it!

My thanks to each of you for posting.

Oh, bridgie, your lemon yellow shirt sounds very nice, too. I had a lemon yellow shirt in the '80s, and it always made me smile.
