Sorry no outfit posts today. Went on the hike this morning. It was just him and I because the other person training for the trip was out of town. We powered through a four mile hike in about two hours. Two miles uphill switchbacks.
He had a movie to go to in the afternoon so we were on a time crunch. But we got through the hike fast enough to get lunch at a nearby brewpub, at his suggestion.

Well it turned out he ended up with a extra ticket to the movie and could not get a hold of his friend. So he invited me to the movie, other people were going too.
So literally I had to run home and shower and change to meet him at the movie. The movie was an independent movie that was part of the Seattle International Film Festival. It was called "Drinking Buddies", a character driven film about people working in the a brewery. After the movie he said that Olivia Wilde's character was his dream woman. Someone who could just hang out with be mellow and drink beer with. A little perplexed by the comment, but not trying to read too much into it.
I got a hug when I met him before the movie, and then again after. This could be a project for my entire summer. At least the hike was awesome exercise.
We're going to the same event on Thursday with the activity group. See what happens there.

I found an old picture of my movie outfit, except that I used a tan bag. Overdressed though.

Sounds great Anna! I understand completely about his ideal woman being someone to just hang out and relax with - I think really, it's what a lot of us want. It's easy to find people to "do" things with, but at the end of the day, its often that we just want someone to "be" with. I wouldn't read too much into it - it sounds to me like that is exactly what the 2 of you did, so I'd say keep going and enjoy it!

Yes, I do. Do you really think the 'spare ticket' was random? The comment re the 'perfect woman thing' is funny don't you think, considering the 'change for who' discussion? Is he suggesting he likes you in the hike, change, movie beer mode?
I think you should start telling us a fictional story from now on so we don't get too voyeurist and/or make you think too much about it! Just a suggestion.

Sounds great so far, Anna! And your outfit for the movie was perfect! A great change from a hiking outfit and very appropriate for an independent film.
For context and so you know you're not the only one, the first time I met my husband we went for drinks and it ended with a handshake (!), the second time was our first "date" and it ended with a hug. Turns out he was trying to be respectful and chivalrous. And he was - I just clearly hadn't dated someone like that before!

Hi. I'll start off with the disclaimer that it's just how I roll, but I never ever ever tell a woman "looking promising" or what not because men are just so hard to read, and I hate contributing to any building of expectations.

That said, I think at least the turn here is interesting and positive. He put a lot of time and energy (physical, etc) into your time together. It was a series of activities. I think his saying something about his ideal woman--unless he's a bit socially inept--is a good thing, like he's making these associations out loud in your presence. I think he likes you. And I know you want a boyfriend, but whatever shape this takes, I think it's a good thing if you can appreciate it. Please do update us! We are all cheering for you.

sounds like you are having fun so far & yes the updates are nice! like the others, I also feel sometimes it is nice to live vicariously. the dating scene can be rough, especially in slow burn seattle.... If he likes beer, I might suggest a date/group date to Gallaghers u-brew in Edmonds. its geat fun, relaxed & you learn a lot making your own beer for about 1 1/2 hr (while having a pint too)

Yes, updates please! So. . . .

1. He knows you can actually power through a hike and that you weren't just trying to please him when you said you liked to hike. [And was his friend ACTUALLY out of town?]

2. He planned an *out* so that he wouldn't have to spend the afternoon with you, but didn't use it; instead he asked you to the movie.

3. He knows you pay attention to your appearance and your wardrobe, but aren't so high maintenance that you can't shower and dress in time to meet him at a specific time.

Sounds good to me. But of course YOU need to decide if he's worth your time and that you aren't hearing and ignoring alarm bells.

Thank you for this opportunity to pontificate on relationships. I'm so happy!
You know, Archer has a point about the "randomness" of the ticket, which is real cute. My #3 bf once explained to me what men go through to ask women out. His plot to ask me out was positively Byzantine. And long term. It was also, I recognise, absolutely essential. It's like in the movie Tootsie, how Jessica Lange says she wishes a man would just say it straight, and when Dustin Hoffman does - she throws her drink in his face. Haha!
Olivia Wilde as dream woman. Well, in my *great* wisdom, I say he's telling you what he thinks he thinks and showing you who he is. Y'all are also knitting one sort of relationship or another by speaking of emotional things and responding to one another. Olivia Wilde is an excellent choice in my opinion. Not that I know anything about her, but she does strike me as "someone who could just hang out, be mellow and drink beer." When left to our own devices, I think that's just who we all go with - someone we can relax around, who causes no worry because they're on our side and has no "if only you'd do this" thoughts about us. Also, most of life is not stimulating conversation and adventure. It's really all about kinda enjoying yourself talking about paper towels ad nauseum.

I want every last detail!! But with caveats. I have my reasons. The caveats are: 90% has to be what's good about him (good now, not how good his potential is). Only 10% can be what's doubtful. And should you have a first kiss, all details stop thereafter. My reason for these caveats are, a girl needs to put up a united front with her guy before her girlfriends. You have to start as you mean to go on. Telling your girlfriends a guy's secret and not-so-secret faults is most disloyal. A girl will get dumped for that and rightly so. If you can't keep it to 10%, you need to dump the guy. Yes.

I enjoy the updates. I don't usually comment on these threads although I do read them. I feel like others have much better advice for you than I would. I've been out of the dating scene for many years and wasn't very intuitive even when I was dating (I am, in many ways, a typical engineer).

Just a word of encouragement to continue taking it easy and getting to know him:

I was not sure whether the first few times my husband and I went out were actually "dates." We had a great time together and did a bunch of different things, even took a day trip to NYC. It was very platonic at first, until I kissed him at a Christmas party. We celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary this week. So you just never know!

I forgot to say I got a picture of us at the top of the hike, with our arms around each other's shoulders. Not entirely the most flattering look as we both were pretty sweaty. He said every time he posts or gets tagged in picture on facebook, his aunts ask him lots of questions about any women in the picture. I asked if it was ok to post the picture of us, and he said yes. So I did post it.

Ooh, big fun. I think he would not have stayed for lunch, let alone asked you to the film if he didn't like you. Maybe this is just me, but I'd rather go to the movies alone than go with someone I'm not interested in. How are you liking him? I like that he can keep up with you on the hiking trail.
