Booties and ankle pants in cold climates

How do you wear your booties in the winter? I live in MN and having a slice of ankle skin exposed in the winter is down right uncomfortable. Is it ok to wear a sock/hose and have it exposed, or does it look downright bad?

All suggestions welcome, photos much appreciated!

PS the high temp here is 39F today. Brr- I'm not ready!

Honestly, I think booties + exposed ankles is a look limited only to fall and spring when the weather is still temperate. In winter, I only wear my booties with full ankle coverage (i.e. with skinnies tucked in, under bootcuts, or with tights and skirts).

I think if the pants are more casual, like BF jeans or something, it might work to wear some funky, cute patterned socks (like stripes or polka dots in a fun colorway) underneath. To be honest, though, even though I like the cute exposed socks look, I still prefer to see some bare skin above the socks (so, booties + ankle socks + strip of bare skin below the pants).

I wear my booties with skirts and tights or regular length pants in winter. No ankle length for me!

I live in Connecticut and don't wear ankle pants in winter, but I do wear my cuffed boyfriend jeans with booties + socks in the cooler weather. I cuff the jeans to hit just below the top of my booties when standing. When I am sitting down you can get a little peek of my socks. Sometimes I wear socks that kind of just blend with the boots, but I have also been known to wear argyles or other fun patterns. Like Diana, I probably "prefer" the peek of bare skin instead of socks -- but it is sometimes just too cold to go there. Cute socks are my compromise.

I live in MN, too, and only wear my booties with skinnes tucked in or with straights tucked out (over the booties, if you know what I mean). I've been wearing booties every day for the past week, what with this cold weather, but with no skin exposed. I give up on my "ankle-ish" boyfriend jeans this time of year and go with my full length ones that I can wear over booties.

Brrr....I'm not ready for this!

I live in MN too. I don't have any ankle-length pants, just regular length, which I wear just slightly over the tops of the booties (they don't cover 100%, especially when I'm walking around), so my socks are sometimes visible. I have been trying to color-match my socks with the booties as much as possible so as to make it less obvious, but I do have one pair of shooties where that is not at all possible. As Diana suggested, I have been contemplating buying some cute socks to wear with these shooties. Haven't gotten around to it yet. I also think I may need to buy some pairs of knee-highs as opposed to my usual crew-length socks. I used to wear long skirts exclusively, and you can layer all kinds of mismatching leggings and socks under them, but now that I've branched out into pants, I'm having to learn as I go.

What probably amounts to full length pant on most, ends up as an ankle length on me...grr! I have a 34" inseam, so often skinnies won't tuck into short boots, if they do, they come untucked as soon as I move around! I need to keep playing with looks as I think I'm just stuck on a specific styling with booties and pants. Thanks for your input ladies!

It's not a look I have tried in winter but I do like it. For me Spring and Autumn would be the seasons to try this but I would be inclined to wear nude stocking socks so that it looks like you are bare legged. That would provide some warmth.

Socks. Definitely socks. Depending on the color of your pants and booties. For me, that would be black so I just do a black sock or a black pindot. If you are into color you could go with the JCrew look and get some cute contrast socks so you would just get a tease of color/pattern or both. Since you leg line is so long you may not have the same concerns of maximum leg length that those of us with shorter inseams have. But definitely comfort and practicality would win out for me.
