Battle of the Trenches: London Fog vs Burberry

I'm going to keep my opinion to myself for now. I want to know which do you prefer on me, and why?

Assume for the exercise that they both cost the exact same thing, which of course, they don't. I really just want to know which is most flattering, and why.
Also assume that minor alterations can be made (i.e., don't let the sleeve length deter your vote).

Please vote

a. London Fog Magenta size PS
b. Burberry size 4 regular
c. Neither

Note:
Both these trenches come with a hood and a removable liner. The London Fog is shown with the liner in and hood on. The Burberry is shown with liner out and hood removed, but the liner in doesn't make a whole lot of difference.

In this case? London Fog.

But.

There are many styles of Burberry, and different colours. And we know the quality is superb. So the fact that this one isn't "it" shouldn't deter you if you are thinking "investment trench."

If it were me, and I lived in your climate (a bit warmer than mine) I would want three trench coats (at minimum). One dark neutral (probably without a liner). One light neutral (probably with a liner..for those cool spring days when you cannot bear the idea of wearing a wool or puffer coat one more minute!!!). And one "fun" colour like the magenta, for just...whatever.

Suz, I tried on 3 different styles today -- had a very helpful SA.

I do already own some trenches, a waterproof herringbone from BR that fits amazing (but alas no liner), a single breasted black trench from BR that is very cute but it is super thin -- it's kind of the equivalent of having one of those packable ponchos in your luggage just in case of sudden downpours, but looks a lot sharper. This is the one I take with me on travels to warm climates -- great for sudden summer rain. NOT for spring. And a cream trench from a Bloomie's store brand, which I actually don't care for much and rarely wear; it fits okay I guess, but the fabric is too stiff.

Got it. Well, I still say the magenta, and keep hunting for "the" Burberry. Because, you know. They are always coming out with new ones.

I prefer where the belt of the Burberry hits. I love the color of the magenta one, but I feel like the proportion is a bit off. Can the belt on that be moved up a little? I think that would fix it.

I like the fit of the B in the underarm area & the length - & it looks fabulous undone. Not sure if it's THE Burberry though. Now I see them together the Magenta one looks all over a little big/long on you. Still love the colour though.

I guess I vote for neither. I really think there is too much fabric in the shoulders for the magenta one (I would not consider altering the shoulders a minor alteration). I have issues with shoulder fit all the time and am very sensitive to it--it always makes me feel like a linebacker when the shoulders are too big. The other one fits better in the shoulders but seems a little too ho-hum and staid to me. Unless you are in love with one or the other, I would keep looking. Sorry!

I bought a ton of popular priced trenches but when I sought and found the perfect Burberrry for me I wondered why I had been wasting my $$. Seriously, if my house is on fire it's one of the three things I grab before I go.
Having said that, the magenta is a lovely colour. Maybe a magenta sweater to go under the classic trench?

Also, not sure this Burberry is your ultimate.

I ask because I am,and finding quality outerwear that fits is really difficult.There is an amazing designer for luxury petite clothes Frankie Ortiz who started the16thBar.She is a petite designer and her collection includes three classic trench coats.Amazing quality and fit.
I have just recently purchased a leather moto jacket from the collection,and a trench is next on my list.
In the pics it looks like the fit is not quite right on either of these trenches,so I vote neither and keep hunting for that perfect fit.

I prefer the magenta of these two - and that is despite my love of Burberry! Their trenches did not work for me AT ALL.

I'm a spanner, apparently. I prefer the B. although I do like the magenta color. B. fits better in the shoulders and arms IMO; the other one looks too big in those areas to me. Dunno about what they told you at the shop, but the Burberry SA told me (when I tried them on with Una and Mochi) that the shoulder fit was paramount bc that's the hardest to tailor.

I am with Diana thinking the LF looks big in the arms/bust area.

The B looks fab to me in all pics but #6 - what is the back pleat doing there? Is that a fluke, or does it always pull like that? If you haven't been to a B store, that may be helpful, even if you don't ultimately buy from there.

The colour of the LF trench looks amazing on you. I am not sure that either trench fits perfectly. I think that Burberry is worth the $$$$. I have had mine for almost 10 years and still love it. But it may not work for you. My DH inherited a LF and an Aquascutum (both from the 1960s) from his grandfather and they are holding up wonderfully.

Thanks for all the input! Here's what I think...

The Burberry -- Pro's
- Fits better in the shoulders
- I prefer the higher-cut armhole
- I prefer the narrower sleeve
- The sleeve length is also exactly right, no shortening necessary
- The scale of the waist and sleeve belts are also on target for my petite frame
- The belt sits exactly where it should
- I prefer the longer length -- it could easily be worn with skirts and dresses (the magenta is well above the knee)
- Even with liner in, it retains most of the fit

Cons
- I'm with Rae -- no idea what's going on in the back there! The SA insisted that it was because I was turning to see the back, and that it was fine, it was supposed to be that way, etc. But I am dubious.
- The collar is too big for my short neck. I felt like I was all collar. All of the styles I tried on did this.

Revisiting the Magenta LF again.... at this sale price, I think it is worth taking it to the tailor to see what can be done with it. Shortening the sleeves for sure. Tapering a bit. I have a suspicion it may even be possible to raise the armholes just a tad, and take a little off the sides. I suspect if I could've tried the PXS before it sold out, it would have fit perfectly, except it would have been an even shorter length.

Not sure about the shoulders and whether they can be taken in a bit, but I actually don't mind a looser overall fit; it's just a different look. There's something very "detective" about it that I find appealing.

I also have to say I actually prefer the material of the LF over the Burberry. It is more drapey and less stiff. Stiff+my soft body doesn't tend to go well together, and I am all about how a garment feels too. The LF feels nicer to wear.

And of course, there is the color. I just can't stop smiling when I put it on. Yes, maybe not the most practical and versatile color but there is still a place for a fun magenta happy trench, I think.

Bottom line: If the LF was $1200 I wouldn't buy it. But it's 1/10th of that. So why not see what a tailor might be able to do with it?

Meanwhile, I've decided to take the $1200 I was willing to invest in a Burberry and use it to finally buy this...

I tried it on yesterday in the next size up, which fit *much* better. They only had it in black at Bloomie's, so I went to Nordstrom last night and ordered the Small in Coastal!

I much prefer the Burberry. Better length and fit. More chic - provided that shade of tan is cool and not yellow. (Although what is going on with the back pleat on the Burberry?).

The magenta is pretty, but the sleeves are too long, and the fit on the torso not quite as streamlined. Gorgeous colour on you though.

Shiny, I'm a big fan of getting as much info as possible when making decisions like this. I take things to the tailor too for a consult before I make my final decision. Just knowing what the true state of affairs is with regard to the alterations really helps!

My question on these fits gets back to layering. Does this neater fit and armhole- sleeve layer over a blazer? Do you need that, or not?

Unfrumped, this Burberry worked with liner in AND with multiple layers, the SA had me try it with a blazer underneath. But check out my other thread tonight... new contender...
