Awesome top or does it look like a tablecloth?

Ever since Angie's report on the inner workings of Karen Kane, I've been surfing the KK site. I saw a lace top that I really liked this AM, but as I thought about it more, I started to wonder if it looks a little bit like a tablecloth. What is your opinion?

Okay... here goes... I'm going to say this as gently as possible. That lace is EXACTLY like the lace curtains I used in my house when I lived in Central America. (Most people down there have lace curtains.) I have a difficult time looking at this top without thinking of the curtains. Beautiful pattern, which is why I bought the curtains for my house, but I'm not sure I'd want a top made out of it. Maybe others don't have this problem, though. Had I not had curtains out of this fabric, maybe I'd react differently.

I think if you layered a colored tank under it and a jacket over it, you would have a completely different look. I have seen similar tops in beautiful outfits.

Welcome to the forum! Of course we're happy to help. Although I'm afraid I have to agree with Ruth....that top looks like drapes, or possibly a big doily. My elderly and very English mother has both curtains and doilies in her house that are strongly reminiscent of that top. Sorry to be so negative...

Looks like white version of a black swim cover up that I just purged this morning (giving to my three-yr old granddaughter for dress up.)

Hi Jo! I am so happy to hear you've been surfing kk.com -- you just made my day! I can see where you could have reservations about that top. I think dianthus' suggestion is a great one - it all depends on how you style it and work it into an outfit. I've attached a photo that I think gives the lace a bit better definition by adding a colored tank underneath (like dianthus suggests) - black is classic, but I think adding some pop colors would also be fun. Hope this helps!

I disagree with naysayers. I really like it and I think with different colored tanks underneath, it creates a different look. And lace is in!

I love this top Jo (and welcome to the forum)! I think the sleeve shape makes it really sing. I like the picture that Michael attached showing it over the black tank and skinnies. It's all in the styling!

Maybe I should take my curtains out of the closet and make a top out of them, LOL! Nope. Sorry. Not ever gonna happen. Yes, lace is in style, but this particular lace top reminds me of my curtains. I can't get that image out of my head.

Yeah, I'm not in love with that shirt. I'm new here too so I am not sure how to pretty it up yet. It's not something I would reach for. Maybe a more geometric lace style? I have no idea.

to me, white lace is virginal, matrimonial or home decor. in a navy blue, i'd be all over it...in fact, i own a very similar top in navy.

I agree that the styling has a big role in how it looks. I work in a business "kinda-formal" environment, so I'm always on the lookout for conservative clothing that has a little more edge to it than a suit. I don't think skinnies are appropriate for my office, sadly, although I do like how it looked in the example that Michael provided. I'll have to think about this one some more.

Bj111, I also wondered if it was the *white* that was making me think home decor. Perhaps if it had been another color (steel blue grey?), I'd be less apprehensive.

Thanks again, and thanks for the welcome! I'm just beginning a new leg of my style journey, having finally shed the postpartum weight. I have to rebuild my wardrobe (work and casual, but I'm starting on work clothes first), but I'm also hoping to look a little edgier than I used to, so it's a work in progress.

The other thing that stops me about this particular lace is the size of the flowers. I know firsthand how large they are. If you're average height or shorter, I'd be careful about wearing this. I also agree that any color other than white would help immensely.

I think it is the scale of the lace flowers that throws me. the actual shape of the top is lovely. I might prefer the lace in a different color.

Agree with others --- that size and placement of the motifs in white lace... I'm sorry, but I too am seeing the little lace doilies people put on the tops of chintzy sofas at head-rest height here A different colour or a non-floral motif would have made all the difference.

Mind you, this CAN be integrated into an attractive outfit, but it'll take some doing to edge it up adequately.

I think it needs a white camisole and faded blue jeans. That will look gorgeous to my eye.
