At Synne’s request: why does it work?

Is it the outfit or the pose that works so well here? If it’s the outfit, what is it that works? I can’t spend my days picking apples, but might could replicate elements of the outfit that work.

It might be useful to cross-reference with my many outfits of dark tights with short skirts of varying shapes, a look that the same Synne who likes this pic so much got really sick of.

Ah... the plot thickens. I did say I wasn't enthralled by the variants in 8-11, didn't I..

And yet the best I've ever seen you are in 1-6. Truly killer look!

Now, they are similar outfits, but clearly not the same. And then the exciting part: what stands them apart!? I will need to ponder this a bit.. will be back!

1-6 are not the same? Au contraire, dear Synne, they were all taken on the same outing: the apples are in the backpack I have on in the cafe. But looking at the different poses can suggest what things I ought to emphasize.

Yes, sorry, I mean every outfit here is similar (short skirt, tights, topper), but 1-6 (which is the same outfit) looks fantastic, while the others not so quite (to me). Is it because the brown jacket is cropped, that makes the silhouette so outstanding? Still thinking about this and something smart(er) to say. Would be interesting to hear others thoughts!

to me, the looks in 7 & 11 work less well than all the others, with 1-6 and 8 working the best. For me I think it's a combo of skirt cuts and proportions.

The flare skirts that are standing out a bit on their own rather than being fitted or lying on the leg like 8's pleats end up not being as pleasing to my eye, and seeing the same red puffer in 8 & 11 is what made me think proportion -- those two are just different enough proportionally that 8 sort of....feels more right.

Thanks jacquez! I wasn’t thinking about it when I put the pictures up, but the dresses in 7 & 11 were purchased after surgery, because anything touching my lower abs hurt, so I was looking for “skater” shapes. No need for things to stand out so far from the body now!

Interesting about the jackets, as the suede one in 1-6 and the puffer in 8 are fairly fitted, with no dropped sleeves and nipping in at the waist.

I would say looks 1-6 are very elongating, you have a column of colour (or similar enough colours) with the top, skirt and tights, the central zip of the suede jacket further elongates the line and the jacket and shoes bookend the look perfectly. The pattern of the skirt and colour of the bag provide creative energy without distracting from the cohesion of the overall look.

I think that the apple picking outfit works because;
1.you have kept to two/three colours
2.you have echoed your jacket colour in your shoes
3.you have created a lengthening line by wearing all dark colours underneath your jacket down to your shoes
4.you are obviously feeling good in it as your smile is big and genuine therefore you are confident.
l really like your red bag but l think a navy one or brown would work really well here too.

I too think it’s the cut of the skirt and the polish of the matching shoes and jacket. But all of them work for me and I note I exist in a peculiar environment.

I agree it works. There is enough going on but not too much. Colours are good, proportions are good and you look happy, fit and ready to tackle the day. It looks like you - authentic to your style.

I like shorter skirts and dresses - I do think shorter fit and flare are a bit harder to style.

Okay, I will try my best to articulate something analytical on this.

The proportions look very good in the apple outfit. The cropped jacket and the shoes with the skirt looks very carefree, joyful, in lack of better words, young. It is so YOU.

But that's just part of the story. The colours I believe are secondary, because this isn't your palette, strictly speaking (hello summer child), but they work well together and looks great on you here.

I think the textures are more important? This outfit isn't flat or stale, it is rich, interesting, the suede with the cotton tights. The shiny leather shoes and the flimsy batik skirt. That is also key here: the folksy pattern on the skirt. Ever so slightly hippie flower child, but constraint and "innocent".

I think that is the takeaway to this: it is authentically YOU.

You have managed to dress like you, your best version. And isn't that aspirational I don't know what is??!

I think the outfit in 1-6 is a standout. I would say that’s because it has:
A mostly neutral palette - very harmonious and easy on the eye
Good pattern (the skirt)
Texture (the jacket and the pattern on the skirt)
Repeated colours
Tonal (the low contrast combination of brown, black and red is rich and luxe looking)
Interesting silhouette (asymmetrical short skirt)
Funky, modern, flat shoes
Fun/personality

I'm with RoseandJoan and Brooklyn as to why #1 to #6 is the standout look:

My 2 cents:

Navy tights and skirt are an elongated column of colour. Looks like you're wearing skirted leggings.

Cognac topper and shoes match, and pull the look together. A form of bookending.

Colour of the pattern in the skirt is repeated in your hair.

Short structured jackets work VERY well with skirts. Attractive proportions.

Blue top works with the "skirted leggings".

Red bag is an expected pop of colour ..... (and to my eye, red goes with everything )

Flat modern shoes.

Comfortable, interesting and fun combination!

Wow, thank you all! You make it sound like I knew what I was doing when I put that outfit together

My suitcase from end-of-year travels has arrived, so I have my red jacket to start putting together my outfit for that pic by Brandenburg gate. Let’s see if I can score a repeat hit. I think I’m going to try one of my fave short skirts, with same-color tights or leggings.
