Ask Angie: maybe what I need is a pair of distressed white jeans?

Angie, you mentioned this morning that white jeans are crisp, graphic and polished. This is true. I'm on board with graphic, but crisp and polished don't feel right for me. It occurred to me today that perhaps what I need to look for is a pair of white jeans with holes? I'm only just getting into the swing of distressed jeans. In theory white jeans should work for me. I like boldness on the bottom and simplicity on top. I love black and white, and I have, like, a thousand black tee shirts. Do white jeans with holes defeat the whole purpose of the look? Or can they work? (I saw a pair today while out jeans shopping).

Anyone else who has an opinion is welcome to comment! I'm all ears (eyes?).

I think they can totally work!! Especially for casual wear (well, obviously...).

Another option -- I think Marley had a fantastic pair of bone jeans. The particular ones she had are not available any more. But they worked a little more easily into some of her outfits.

White BF jeans would definitely look less crisp and polished. Holes would casualize it further

Suz -- bone jeans is a good suggestion, but I prefer true, bright white. I just love white. Go big or go home, right?

Aida -- yes, the ones I saw downtown today were baggy drop-crotch boyfriend jeans. With giant holes in the knees. I would have tried them on if the distressing had been more subtle, but I've learned that giant knee holes are a deal-breaker for me. I've tried on a few pairs in the past while, in the spirit of experimentation (even though I doubted I'd buy them) and managed to accidentally shove my foot through the hole, making them, ah, a little more distressed for the gal who does eventually buy them.

I do that too! My sis gave me a pair of her distressed shredded jeans that she isn't wearing, and the first thing I did when trying them on was attempt to push my foot right through the thigh

The foot-through-hole thing is a problem. I returned a pair of distressed white boyfriend jeans for that reason. I would have patched the holes, but I anticipated that I wouldn't get around to it for a while. And the jeans were really not what I was after, anyway.
All of that said, though, if I were in the market for distressed white jeans, I'd have no problem patching the holes enough to avoid poking through them with my toes as I tried to put them on. (If you patch from the back of the fabric, it's less noticeable, and you still have the distressed look.) And I think your idea of distressed ones sounds great for your style.

haha, Aida -- I thought it was just me.

Firecracker, that's a good idea about patching the jeans. Actually I bought a pair of distressed jeans yesterday that came with patches (attached from the inside, like you suggest). But they are small patches in the thighs. I'm not sure how I feel about patching really big holes, especially at a stress point like the knee. My reasoning is this: if I accidentally managed to rip a pair of jeans myself, I would have patched them well before they got to the giant knee hole stage!

I think we're going to need several styles of white and cream jeans, all different, to make our black tops interesting and year-round. Graphic tops too. Good luck with the hunt.

Argh -- so close, and yet so far! Thank you for the links. Those are awesome jeans. Too bad they're sold out in my size. But no matter. As it happens, I've blown my jeans budget for the fall anyway. I ended up buying the Citizens racer skinny in "renegade" wash (faded an lightly distressed) and the Rag & Bone "The Dre" slim boyfriends in the "Bradford" wash (medium blue with some whiskering and fading). I really like each pair, but for different reasons, so I think I need to keep them both. (One pair will be a birthday present). But still, neither pair was cheap, so bye bye jeans budget.
