Ask Angie: Best flats for cool/cold weather.

I have looking for a comfy pair of flat shoes to go with jeans - any suggestions? I have a pair of animal print which I love but those and my ballerinas are not warm enough for our current Bay Area cold and wet weather. I have loafers which are just ok, boots and a pair of Eccos but the Eccos are a bit too drab and not comfortable as I do LOTS of walking. For fun, I am wondering what chic casual Italian and French styles might be out there????

Not Angie, but I only wear flats and could not get dressed without booties that are comfortable flats and can be worn with wool socks to keep feet warm. Sam Edelman Petty booties come in a variety of colors and a couple of animal prints.

Yes, boots, but waterproof ones. If you search waterproof boots at Zappos, 132 pairs come up. Many are flat.

I was also thinking flat or low-heeled booties, and you could mix things up with a fun oxford or other type of closed-toe shoe or a dressier (leather) sneaker?

as an alternative to boots/booties, i like oxfords and monk strap shoes. and of course, thanks to the athleisure trend thats still going strong, there's always sneakers…

Oxfords or smoking slippers are warmer than ballet flats for me - especially if I'm wearing pants so I can wear socks. But low boots are definitely warmer and suitable for those days when it's properly raining (hello this winter).

It may depend on the style of your jeans and pant hems -- length and width as to how you expect them to " fall" over footwear, or if you roll them.
Narrow hems won't go over a lot of ankle boots but will scrunch on Oxfords and monk straps if you like that look. exposed ankles are too cold for me in winter even with nude hose. Slightly wider hems and bootcuts work with booties.

Here's a couple of my go-to options. Obviously they don't work for super cold or snowy weather, but are good otherwise. The booties have a pointy toe that make them look more refined, and they work with skirts/dresses as well as pants. I also like the booties because I can wear black no-show ankle socks inside them for comfort and warmth (I like the athletic ones because they tend to stay on better.)

The biggest problem I have with flat shoes in the winter is that my feet get cold THROUGH the soles. Many shoes, even if they have more coverage on the top of the foot, have thin enough soles that they are very cold. So I find that creeper soles work best for regular shoes; otherwise I wear boots ("real" boots instead of indoor boots). Perhaps, though, this isn't as big a problem depending on what one defines as cold.

I live in Mill Valley (sf Bay Area) and I walk a ton (hills). For sporty casual, I've loved my timberland Glastonburys (in grey but folded up--like booties--From Nordstrom; Angie recommends the wedge version of these) and Born Kerri booties in curry (zappos). Both are super comfortable and plenty warm with smart wool socks. I used waterproofing spray on both and haven't had any issues with normal wear (i.e. Not wading through puddles).

I ended up with booties! Believe it or not, they are my first pair and I thought this is a good way to update my shoe look.

I tried AGL as well, and while they were cool, I didn't feel like I could do a lot of walking in them...and they did make my feet look even longer
