Angie and all -

I was planning to purchase the classic J Crew Majesty Peacoat this year, but upon looking at current reviews, it seems the coat has changed. Have you seen this year's version and what are your thoughts? Still good, or should I hold out?

Second question - I found last year's version on Ebay, but I have never tried on the coat. Is it a safe bet sight unseen for an apple shape? (I know you haven't seen pics of me in a while). The Ebay seller does accept returns, but with a re-stocking fee, etc. Would like your thoughts on if you think it would be a good fit for an apple.

Hi Marianna,

I have this coat from several years ago (4 I think) and it's a terrific coat -- but I will say that the design changes they made seem potentially unfriendly to an apple. The big flap outside pockets on the front are a complete addition to the design and make it less sleek, and I am not sure anyone needs the bulk added right there in the stomach/hip area! I think this in particular is what commenters are responding to -- that, and the loss of the traditional gold buttons on the belt at the back. But the big front pockets are what is likely to be a serious problem for many female figures.

If the ebay version is in your size and is a color you like and does not have these pockets, I would encourage you to try it. Mine is actually a bright pink and I wear it a lot. I love this coat. It's well made, warm, and stylish. Especially since you can return it (I'm assuming the restocking fee is small) it is probably worth it. Mine is still going strong after 4 years and I expect to wear it a lot this year too.

Viva makes some very good points! I've worn the coat below for the last two years - slightly different design to what you posted. I have it in a size 4 - which fits my shoulders (IT here) but is a little over generous in the torso area. I love the colour!

I bought this coat 5 years ago and it ran large then, Marianna. The quality is impeccable.

I can't believe they took away the side entry pockets this year - very foolish style update. I would not purchase this coat if you cannot return it.

I'm with Angie. The side entry pockets are key to really fab peacoat design and function. And most coats in general. Stuffing hands under flappy topped pockets is not friendly or fab. Hard to do and poof goes that fab nonchalant look. I would go even further and say I would not get this coat. Look at other makers or wait until JC comes to their senses.

This was one of several issues for me with the JC field coat. Since it would be more of an outdoor coat, I knew I'd want to stuff hands in pockets. Since it's a stiff coat the pocket flaps are also..stiff and more prominent. I know field coats have the hip pockets as part of the style so I probably am not looking for that style for outdoors .

Sue, do you enjoy that mid-blue colour? I am seriously considering one on eBay in that colour.

Not to derail your thread, Marianna. I think you should go for an eBay version but only if it is returnable.

How discouraging that they changed the design for the worse! Why would they do that to a classic coat? Ugh!

I may try the eBay one. It's the older version with the side entry pockets. It's the "bone" color which I like... very neutral.

It looks to me like there are two sets of pockets on the changed jacket. There are side entry pockets above the patch pockets. They are quite high, though.

Thanks, all. I went ahead and ordered last year's version on eBay. It is returnable if it doesn't work. Getting ready for fall.
