Thanks all for your great recommendations! I spent a couple of hours last night scouring the web looking at the brands and shoes you recommended, and I have a short list of shoes that I really like -- there is a wide range of prices reflected here.

Given that I am looking for a hybrid of style and comfort, what is your opinion of these?

(The pics are Cole Haan outlet wedges that I could not collect, price $140; and the SW loafers that I still love, $435.)

The Chies will probably be most comfy. You need dressy black booties too.

I like them all although I find #1 in your latest round up seems a bit dull.

I LOVE those black booties that Gryffin linked to, the last pair. Stunning.

They're like an even more "grown up" version of my own Stuarts.

I guess that doesn't answer your question about shoes -- I think you need to try on for comfort. I like the blue snakeskin ones, and the Chies for looks....

Oh I love the 6pm ones! Have you seen these?

Late to this party, but it seems that there are lots of block heeled shoes this fall. You can't go wrong with Stuart Weitzman for style, quality and, usually, comfort. My next choice for more affordable shoes are VanEli, find them at Marmi Shoes on line, and also Amalfi-Rangoni shoes are great, both in a $150-$200 price range. I think when you go below that price, unless you're buying on sale, that you sacrifice quality. I also think that made in Italy shoes are usually better. Just my opinion, as someone who stands on her feet but needs to look fashionable.
