Another try at the flower-butt dress

On the way to the grocery store (really, they’re in the same shopping center!), I stopped in WH/BM to see if there was another of these dresses with a better pattern placement. Well, there were two — one in a size 10 (which is one I tried before) and in an 8. The 8 had way better pattern placement so I took it into the fitting room but not with high hopes. Well, the 10 was not only a little too long in the top but also too roomy all around on top, once I took a closer look. I tried on the 8, and the hip is a little snug but not ridiculous. The SA said the 8 really looks like the much better fit. If I manage to lose even just a few pounds in the next few months (doable for me if I practice some discipline), it should be more comfortable. Plus, something I didn’t really factor in my brief earlier try-on — this dress has some stretch. I kept it on for a short while, sitting and bending, and I swear it loosened even in the time I had it on. So I bought it to evaluate further at home. I really do like the vibe of this for a dressy summer wedding.

The SA also brought the striped dress to me. I like it but it’s pretty va va voom. Not sure where I would wear it. I left it behind.

Wonderful- I think the dress looks great on you-love the print (will take your word on back pattern placement.) Loved the long black number on you also but understand you leaving it behind if unsure on cost per wear and lifestyle use- but you still looked great in it.

I really like the va-va-voom dress too! I would be tempted to have it shortened to midi length. I like maxis but I tend to find midis more practical. I find them a little more casual and cooler in the heat.

Both dresses look great. I really like the fit of the striped dress, but I find maxi dresses harder to find occasions to wear.

Janet, I am going to be honest. Bare in mind that maybe I'm wrong, since I only have 2 pics to judge from.
I think dress in pic 1-2 is too tight. And even if you do fit in it, because your great figure allows you to, it doesn't do justice to your beauty. By pulling over the hips, it makes them look as if they should be narrower, when in fact this is precisely a lovely attribute of yours, something other women work out hard to get close to. Also, I'm not a fan of cap sleeves when they are stretched over the shoulder. You have strong, beautiful fit arms (as shown in #4, for example), but the sleeves' hem cut your arm at its widest part, just like when a midi stops mid-calf on an athlete. Finally, something bothers me in the dress bottom hem, the way it flips outward, like a pencil cut that changed it's mind on their way there but it was too late. A good cut would have allowed room for your curves and have penciled the pencil IMO.
By contrast, the dress in 3-4 suits you so much better, under every aspect. It celebrates you instead of trying to make you fit into a mould that isn't appropriate for you, it brings out your vibrant shape, yet it looks relaxed enough that you can entertain friends for an evening but I could see you kick off your shoes and go barefoot with equal pizzazz.
Oh - and your little blue jacket number is just adorable and so you! That blue is amazing on you.

More than a few years ago I bought a blouse that was too snug in the waist/hips and I kept it and used it as a motivator to drop a few pounds. It worked, but I don’t recommend doing that. I agree with krishnidoux above. I think the floral dress is just a tad too snug, but this could also be my own preference for how I like dresses to fit me. I much prefer the fit (and for you, the style) of the striped dress, and I like the suggestion by Brooklyn to shorten it to midi length. Your WIW in pic 5 is fantastic.

I appreciate all the feedback. I do think that the fitting room lighting and photos tend to emphasize every shadow, and with the ruching on the dress, it may emphasize the slight snugness. Honestly, I tried on my old floral dress (that I’ve worn to every wedding for the last four years), and it fits pretty much exactly like this. I prefer them to fit a little bit easier, and since I seem to be at my peak size/weight at the moment (when I’m now stepping up my activity with warmer weather arriving), I’m more comfortable with hanging onto a slightly snug dress than I normally would be. I have some time in the return window.

Krish, the “hem flip” is just that the hem of the dress caught on the edge of the stool, not actually the cut of the dress.

I like the floral dress and the bit of flutter sleeve makes it church appropriate without having to wear a topper. The striped dress, does not look like your style. It seems sporty and, agreeing with those who would shorten it. You have a fabulous figure, though, and this dress really shows it off.
Your bonus outfit makes me want to run out and buy a cobalt jacket. Love that outfit.

I have to be honest in saying that the floral dress looks too tight. I understand how dresses can relax a bit with wear, but it's doing that bum-cupping thing that makes it look too snug across the hip and bum. I like the striped one too but also want to cut off a lot of length - as Angie mentioned.

The second one looks like the right size and is interesting but I don't think the construction is as good as the design and the first one looks too snug.
I love the style of the first for the event but think you might want to keep looking.

Kerry, yes, it has a good bit of stretch (which is impressive in a lined dress), so it was comfortable even when I sat or crouched down -- in fact, I could feel it loosening up as I wore it. That's part of why I'm pretty optimistic about this dress's potential to work for me. I gotta admit, the contrarian part of me is getting really motivated to lose a few pounds by the comments here that they see the dress as being too snug! I appreciate all the feedback.

I wonder if pictures in better lighting would help. I am normally in line with Angie's opinions on good versus too tight, but I see the dress as pulling at the hip and cupping the backside, which indicate that it is too snug. But Angie didn't see that, and I'm wondering if I'm seeing it "wrong". You have a killer figure and I think you normally look fab in everything.

I absolutely adore the black dress, though, and think it would be worth buying and shortening!

It's interesting about the "bum cupping" thing -- almost all sheath dresses do that on me, and I don't even have much of a booty. I think it's because I have a lot of real estate in the hip region. A skirt actually has to be practically A-line to fall straight down from my backside, and actually that's not a great look on me. I don't mind a little curve at the bum in a dress as long as it's not extreme. For example, the Fuzzi dress fits me like that. I think it's pretty natural in a stretch fabric.

I also admit that the lighting and my undergarments are not helping in these photos. Maybe I'll try to get a better set at home.

I like the "butt cupping". I echo Jenni. I think your bottom looks KILLER, Janet. The dress is skimming the contour of your body in a good way to my eye. Sheath dresses tend to do that to me because my bottom is round. It's how our bodies are built. Dress isn't pulling in front on the hips. The ruching is relaxed. There is enough length and coverage. I think the dress fits well. It's body con, and in a refined way.

I hate to say it because I don't like perpetuating stereotypes that say dark colors are automatically more flattering than light colors, but it does play a part. Pulling and cupping is harder to see on a darker color. I often end up buying a size up in light colors simply because they accentuate what I see as my flaws. FWIW, I don't see your figure as having flaws, which is why I wonder how much the lighting is contributing to what some people are seeing.

I'm also curious about how much V-ing in the front of a dress is a good fit, too. I have a poison eye for v-ing in the hip/pubic area, which is completely my own issue. Like Lisa, I have to wonder how much my own body issues are playing a part here, so I will just stop typing and read (and hopefully learn).

Interesting discussion about fit here, which is valuable for us all. I do see the bum cupping issue from both sides - figuratively speaking . I suppose it's purely a personal issue and has nothing to do with being too tight. My personal phobia of body con clothing is playing too big a role in how I see fit on others. This was an interesting lesson. And for the record, you do not have body issues or "flaws" at all. I am also a believer in not buying things for a future weightless or new size.......just saying

My first thought was that it looks a bit snug...but not a whole size snug. More like you're between sizes. Then I clicked through and looked at the dress on the skinny model and it is actually fitting her pretty much the same way (except it looks about 500% better on you than on her!!) and I also considered my own dressy cocktail sheath dress, which basically fits like this one does on you, bum cupping and all -- and I know I love to wear that dress on the rare occasions I get to wear it.

It's a killer gorgeous dress on you. Hopefully it will ease up a bit with wear and you can go to the event in perfect confidence. Also, does Jamie love it? If he loves it, you're set.

While some cuppage is an indicator of good fit in a sheath dress, actually returning against the back of the thighs is too snug for my taste.
But maybe it just looks like that in the photos?

Tricky. I think the dress fits - it just fits in a body con way that perhaps we are not used to these days. I prefer it to the black stripes, but prefer your shopping outfit most of all. Not so helpful I admit.
