Probably the same amount, only different kinds. Over twenty years ago, I used to wear mascara, blush and lipgloss. Now I use tinted moisturizer, a little eye shadow, blush and lipstick. I had to stop wearing mascara the year my parents died. Every time I drove somewhere, I cried the whole time I was in the car. The makeup remover to take off waterproof mascara bothered my eyes, so I just gave it up.

I’ve always worn very little however when I worked in an office requiring a suit I wore mascara, shadow and lip gloss. Since then I mostly do nothing. Sometimes will use a bb cream and since my eyebrows have vanished with age ???? I have started filling them in a bit. I still use lip gloss.
I have 2 teenage daughters and I can certainly attest to lots of makeup for them. So far no fake eyelashes - probably because mama won’t pay for it . Lol. They like to experiment and get lots of ideas from YouTube.
They still like to show me their creativity and have gotten quite good at it.

Angie! How did you live through the 90s without succumbing to brown lip liner! (I recall that Bobbie Brown brown lipstick would rub off, leaving only the liner around my lips. SUCH a good look!).

Laura, I remember that '90s look! Didn't do the nail polish to match either. I held on strong to my light '80s lippie.

I don't bother if I'm mostly at home or just going to the grocery store. When I go out I do eye make-up, tinted moisturizer, blusher and lipstick.

I got in trouble in 7th grade for putting on lipstick before the school day ended. Strictly forbidden.

It has varied a lot over the years--a lot in the early 60s, then came the "natural" 70s, more again in the 80s, less in the 90s. It was so easy to go "natural" when I was young--not so lovely now. I never could manage the false eyelashes so popular in the 60s.

With my hair now at its natural color, I find I look rather faded now unless I have some eyes, cheeks, and lips done.

About same, just different distribution over the years, as others have said.

Is anyone familiar with Thrive Causemetics? I succumbed to a Facebook ad that had a video demonstrating using this single product on cheeks, eyelids and lips. It's really nice - gives a very natural glow. I'll post pics later.

The same. I am a very consistent person.

Have never heard of Thrive... am interested! A three-in-one is my product of choice now.

I always loved and wore lots of eye makeup (I mean LOTS); but nothing else. Foundation felt awful back then, so thick and chalky, and lipstick wore right off since I was always either talking or eating or smoking.

Now I am 60 and don't leave the house without some kind of skin cover (BB cream or tinted moisturizer), wear very little eye makeup beyond mascara and a bit of pencil, and I WISH I could wear lipstick. Almost anything on my lips irritates them. I put it on if I'm going to be on camera at all, or schmoozing in some public way. Then I run home and cold cream it off. Sad.

I used to wear only foundation and mascara, but I was never seen without it and felt very uncomfortable not having it on in front of other people. I grew up in a church that considered makeup to be immodest, so even the small amount I wore was done in secret. But I was very self conscious about my acne, hence the foundation, and then that made me look a little washed out so I would do the mascara to bring a little definition back.

Now, I wear a lot more when I plan to "be seen", ie. at work, going to parties, etc. And I wear absolutely NONE other times, e.g. going on casual outings with my family, running errands, etc. So I've moved from "a little, always" to "either a lot or none".

When I put on makeup, I wear: tinted BB cream, under eye coverup, powder, blush, eyeliner, brows, lipstick (I like bright shades). Sometimes eyeshadow, which as taken me the longest to get the hang of, sometimes bronzer (I'm fair so I really just wear a dark shade of blush as a bronzer), sometimes a shimmer powder on my face or highlighting pencil on my lower lashline and tearduct. I don't wear false lashes because I don't enjoy that look, but I like that I can flex my makeup look to suite my mood or feel comfortable in none at all.

I wear much less than I did when I was younger. I think products have improved so much that the "less is more" system works best for me. Like others mentioned, I focus on skin care more than ever. I only wear tinted mineral sunscreen, eyeliner, brow gel, and tinted lip balm unless I am going to a fancy evening event. Most of the women I work with are similar. Minimal but polished.

I didn't answer the question first round, but I nearly always wear makeup. I'd say I wear less as I've gotten older, but maybe a lot more skincare underneath it. I go out to walk with my dog in the morning, sunscreen only, but that's about it in terms of the barefaced look.

Same as Suz and Torontogirl—always been a makeup minimalist but have changed products and techniques through the decades. Even at my peak makeup stage in my 40s, I still kept the effect very muted—a bit of concealer instead of foundation, a swipe of mascara instead of shadows and liners, and a nude lipstick instead of a bright color. Currently a taupe brow pencil replaces the concealer, a brownish liner for tightlining now subs for mascara, and a multi-purpose cheek/lip stain for a bit of color when necessary are the only products I use over my tinted mineral sunscreen.

Can I also say that I really wish the words “polished” and “natural” weren’t associated with makeup preferences. The number of products and the manner of application is a personal choice and I’ve never considered myself “rough”—or even “natural”—just because my preference skewed more minimal than another woman’s.

More, definitely. Not as in more piled on, but as in more types of products. I think that is mostly a factor of learning how to use them, and products getting better and more varied...so with me loving makeup and thinking it's fun, there's just more to play with.

More and different. When I was younger (I mean pre-menopause ), my skin was oily and problematic and I mostly wore various sorts of foundation and powder combination to tame the shine and camouflage. Probably to my detriment. I would play around with lipcolor but basically that was it. I have waited a long time to be able to use moisturizer and try to glow, but that is where I am now and I am going with it. I have also added blush, mascara and eyebrow pencil or similar to my routine and have begun to play with highlighter.
And lip color - I even have a recommendation:
https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/b.....lm/5168071
(I still haven't figured out how to add a find with my chromebook)
Only lipcolor that actually moisturizes my lips and doesn't make me want to add lipbalm within an hour. The color is strong at first but fades beautifully.
Who knew I had become such a beauty blabbermouth ?

I never wore much makeup, but some things did change.

In my 20s I wore dark lipstick or very shiny lip gloss every day. I also always applied eyeliner when going out, and clear mascara.

In my 30s it was just tinted lip gloss. I loved the Bourjois shimmery ones from ten years ago (3D effect I think they were called).

Now in my 40s, if I wear makeup, I add a few more things I didn't use to wear: tinted BB cream or light foundation, concealer, subtle highlighter, natural-looking blush for "flushed cheeks". All of these really are meant to even out my skintone and make me look a bit less tired and more polished. They are not about making a big statement (as, say, smoky eyes or giant eyelashes or caterpillar eyebrows).

So I guess the answer is: now that my skin is not as young-looking, I wear makeup to counteract the effects of time...

PS. No more shimmery lipgloss as those look outdated to my eyes. Now I wear lip tints and sheer matte lip balm.

Probably about the same amount over the years. When I was young and younger ('m now 66), I wanted to wear foundation but never found the right shade for my Asian complexion. In my 50s I played around with mineral foundation -- which isn't so great when you start to get wrinkles. But truth to tell, I.just.can't.be bothered.

Mostly over the years, I've worn eyeliner, eye shadow, and lippie that I tend not to reapply as the day wears on. I now add undereye concealer, eyebrow pencil, and tinted moisturizer. My eyelashes are so straight that eyelash curling doesn't work. I hope to some day learn how to use mascara, but I'm lazy.

Revitalash has made my eyelashes, grown thinner in the past few years, grow longer and thicker, so I feel less compelled to use eyeliner. And I just got eyebrow serum to see if I can eventually give up the eyebrow pencil. If this version doesn't work, I will get Revitalash.

I wear a lot more makeup now than I did when I was younger. I didn't wear foundation until maybe my 20s. Then I didn't put it on my nose, for some reason. I find that kind of hilarious and a little mortifying now. I always wear makeup when I am in street clothes (i.e., not workout clothes, which I wear for working out), even if I am not planning to leave the house.

So interesting to read everyone’s make-up history. I did avoid false eyelashes and white lipstick back in the 60’s although I loved Twiggy and it was great to see my body type celebrated.

I wear a lot less makeup now than I did when I was younger. I started wearing makeup around 15-16, mainly experimenting with eye shadow colors and mascara. In my 20s and 30s I wore the most makeup, including foundation, and powder, neither of which I needed. Ditched it all but lippie—the one constant in my makeup life—in my 40s. As I got older, I added a bit of cream blush, then as my eyebrows thinned, brow makeup. Those three products are the mainstay of my current routine, which I can do in about 3 minutes. If I'm going out to dinner or the theatre, I will take more time with my makeup, maybe add eyeshadow or line my eyes as well. I wear mascara rarely, only because I find it too fiddly to fuss with. However, I do like the look, so sometimes I will break out the wand and go for it.

In my teens and twenties (in the '70s and '80s) I wore BOTH less AND more makeup than I do now. Some days, I used very little or no makeup. Other days, I wore full makeup. I was experimenting a lot, using different colours, products and techniques.

For several years now, my go-to makeup on early, busy mornings has been: translucent powder, blush, mascara and lipstick or coloured lipgloss. If I have a little more time, I like to use eyeliner (in the form of a soft pencil). If I feel the need AND have the necessary time, I might also apply concealer, a tinted moisturizer and eyebrow products. However, eyeshadows and highlighter are used on special occasions only.

My make-up usage is about the same from age 18 to now. When I was at school, I never wore make-up at all, except for social occasions.

At 18 I got a job in a department store (whilst at university) selling cosmetics, initially for Revlon and then Clarins. We were required to wear the colours of the season and this was the time that I wore the most make-up. It was really part of the job and often the other consultants would do me up when I arrived at work after being at university with a more natural make-up.

When I commenced working in a professional firm I still wore make-up (and still do) but it is hopefully reasonably subtle despite often wearing a brighter coloured lipstick.

I use the following products - foundation, concealer, translucent powder, blush, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, lip primer, lip pencil, lipstick, brow pencil - everyday. It take me less that 10 minutes to put this on and complete a facial cleansing and moisturising routine.

More.

I always wore eye makeup (my eyes are very pale and without something to define the edges, I can look a little embryonic) but not always foundation.

Now I never skip either. Lip color too, always.

More. I started late. In my twenties. A friend ( who studied make up) showed me how I could use eyeshadow. What a revalation. I have hooded , small and deeplying eyes and she covered my eyes with taupe till the browbone. I still do that. Only now I can learn more tricks with youtube. I couldn't wear mascara that stayed put because of my eyeshape. Now I found some from Clinique. And yes brows need work now. My face is sunscreen, powder make up and blush. Lipstick. I want to be finished in 5 minutes.

I don’t know if I’m old enough for such a retrospect :). But I’ve gone from little makeup to a (relative) lot back to no makeup or very little.
As a teen I started experimenting with mascara & lipgloss, also nail polish. In my twenties I had a friend who loved the extravagant manuals of makeup artists to play around. It was also the rise of youtube and its many makeup gurus. Never easier to learn new applications or find product reviews. I experimented a lot, especially with eyeliner and colorful smokey eyes - in my spare time. For work I wore a ‘full face’ with foundation, blush, powder, neutral eyeshadow and eye pencil and mascara. Gradually I lost interest and started minimizing. Got rid of 90% of my collection. Nowadays IF I wear makeup it’s concealer, tinted moisirizer, blush and mascara OR statement lipstick. I much prefer the no or light makeup look now but who knows how things will evolve :).

I wear about the same, just differently. I didn't start wearing foundation until my mid 30's, but wore tons of eye shadow. Now I wear virtually no shadow, but do liner, mascara. I do just a bit of contouring (very light) with bronzer and really like it.

I'm with you - I wear pretty light make up but always have, possibly because I'm not that skilled at applying it.
I definitely see a generational divide where the younger people in my circle wear more. They wear it well and know what they're doing, so maybe its really a skill issue and how many hours you've spent watching Youtube tutorials??

Much less now. In HS I wouldn't leave the house without a full face of makeup. Eyes alone were 3 shades of powder, liner and mascara.

Now daily makeup more focused on skincare and eye definition (brows, mascara)

About the same. I wear mascara, blush, under eye Concealer, and lipstick. Always have. Every once in a while I’ve gotten the notion to add foundation, eyeliner, and eye makeup to the mix, but it never lasts. Less is more, for me anyway.

I would say I wear about the same amount in terms of how heavy/light the makeup is and how many products I apply, though the products have changed. Before I used liquid foundation, and now I use tinted sunscreen/moisturizer followed by a light dusting of mineral powder. Before I used mascara, and now I use eyeliner only (my lashes are pretty dark). I still use a light blusher and eyeshadow. I rarely wear lipstick, just untinted lip balm. My complete makeup routine (after skin care) takes no more than 5 minutes.

I have two teen daughters (ages 16 and 13). There is a wide variety amongst their peers regarding the amount of makeup worn. Some never wear any makeup. Some wear makeup only for special occasions. Most do not wear makeup every day. I'm not sure there are very many who wear makeup every day. A few wear makeup that is so heavy at times as to be clownish. My own daughters usually wear minimal or no makeup, but do wear light makeup on occasion, or heavier for special occasions (e.g, prom).
