Shannon, thank you so much for bringing this up and sharing your own experience. You are right to go for a pink shade of blush, and I like your "less is more" approach.
I am challenged with the same phenomena. It's not just age, it's also this time of year (less sun, less active, overheated insides...). Lately, I switched from Bare Minerals to a tinted moisturizer too (Laura Mercier). But although the skin match is perfect, I have found it to look a little too heavy/too dark/too greasy on me! And this even if I have a sensitive/dry skin. I apply it with a brush, like I was shown, not the flat type but a round narrow, softer one. It does help spread the product more evenly, and it helps in applying the concealer too (I'm a big fan of Benefit's Erase Paste).
However, 3 things have been helping me greatly in getting clearer, healthier looking skin:
Sothys gommage exfoliant Biological Skin Peeling: not to be scared off by the name, it's a exfoliant, however not the grainy type. It comes as a paste, of which you spread a thin layer on your clean face. You wait about 2 minutes, then start to gently rub with the fingers, ever so softly, in circles. You will see it "peel" in tiny bits of paste + dead skin. (I recommend doing this over your sink). You really have to be gentle, patient and go everywhere you applied it, and you must rinse it really well, even better, shower afterwards. I always finish off with an upwards-strokes mini massage. It is really miraculous, nothing to do with grainy exfoliants. You do this 2X week.
Clarins HydraQuench Intensive Serum Bi-Phase applied before your daily moisturizer. They recommend also applying it at night but I admit I haven't done this. I was skeptic at first, but gave it a try and must say my skin looks more radiant and more supple, which helps for makeup.
Nightly: Neostrata smoothing cream level 3.
