I like to be unencumbered. So I haven't worn maxi dresses since I lived all on one floor. I have some bracelets but have to force myself to wear one occasionally, balancing out Why? with completing a composition. I do wear necklaces sometimes but almost never in summer when it's very hot and humid. I have loads of scarves. I do wear them in winter with coats but not always, resulting in deep discomfort and regret.
I got rid of all my floatier, silkier, slipperier scarves. I want things to stay put. I will often anchor a scarf to itself with a brooch. It makes the whole thing heavier. Most of my winter clothes are plain and I like that. Much more print in summer, though I haven't evaluated this year's summer clothes yet. I often will wear a print scarf when it has large areas of the two colors I am wearing plus a perkier neutral like ivory. So I"m probably happier when the scarf seems like an organic outgrowth of the outfit, vs an accent. Also, I don't like people remarking on my clothes. I went to mail a letter at a local substation that was in the community center where they have activities and classes for seniors. I spotted my friend there and went over to chat with her and take a gander at the senior's projects of the day. She told me afterward that many of them had commented on how I didn't dress like anybody else - many of them do get very dressed up either in a sporty luxe or dressy way depending on the activity, so they're very interested in style. She told me that it was finally decided that I dressed European. Why? I had worn a scarf. Wearing a scarf makes me not fit in anywhere around here and a lot of places throughout my life.

That’s fascinating, Vildy. Just the wearing of a scarf in the first place making you an original...

Well there’s a few reasons.
1) I love textiles, particularly prints.
2) they keep me warmer, as I’m often cold.
3) I live right under a hole in the ozone layer and the sunburn here is fierce, so the less neck exposure the better.
4) They take the focus off my face and hair. I see that as a positive. Give the people something pretty to look at up top.
4) I like swishy clothing. And scarves are a bit swishy.

Rachy, I am an occasional scarf wearer and had to laugh at Krish's response, because that is me - I construct outfits for the scarf, not the other way around mostly. I am not sure if scarf wearing is a learned behaviour, hence my "scarf challenge" or if I am just a sporadic scarf wearer. I always travel with a scarf and like them for an additional layer of warmth in winter, it is the more decorative scarves that I am less inclined to wear, yet I love them on others and think they look incredibly stylish.

Yikes Ledonna, that is scary!

I wear winter scarves for warmth of course but also to add some interest to my coats which are all pretty plain so as to not clash with my clothes. And I wear decorative scarves as an accessory to an outfit. Love how they can tie two colors together to finish an outfit. I have found myself wearing them less lately, they get too warm and feel too fussy sometimes.

Most of my reasons have already been covered. I love textiles and am drawn to scarves as an easy way to add pattern and texture to an outfit. I also live in a place with highly variably temperatures, so they're an easily layer to adjust over the course of a day. Finally, I have sensitive skin, which is worse on high allergy days or when the air is particularly dry. On those days, I can be irritated by the metals in necklaces, so a soft scarf is a good substitute.

Chris, thank you so much for the maitai tutorials link! It's a gold mine.

Ledonna, oh no!! That is awful...I am hoping your sister will be okay...

My reasons have all been covered by the others -- warmth for my long neck/ short hair/ cold climate; balance (bookending); textural interest; colour/ pattern near face; as a travel layer; they are "lighter" than necklaces which sometimes tangle, get caught in hair (even short hair) and just generally feel hot in summer; they fill up the space in my chest area so help proportions....I could go on.

I'm always reminded by the accident that took Isadora Duncan's life plus others who've either been strangled or had a near miss with their scarf.
