I believe this story started about a month ago. I became aware of a navy or ink blue Fedora (has tassels on it) $50.00. This was in Talbot's catalog.

I had bought a navy and white gingham popover that I did not like the fit of. With the approval of my good friends on YLF I decided to purchase navy and white gingham pants and bomber from Target. They are absolute keepers. Love both pieces. So, took the popover top back to Talbot's to exchange for hat. They did not get the hat at this store, and did not think they would be getting it at all. They were having a 50% of any two items or more. I bought 2 bangle bracelets (gold and navy and white for summer. Also a cute turtle brooch. Am keeping the jewelry. I also bought a lemony yellow shirt. I can wear lemon especially well ( I think) Also a navy and white stripe knit dress which I will return, too small. All five items were marked down and with 50 % off that, Well, you can see where this is going, lol. I only wish I could see it, or at least admit it!!

Talbots charges a flat fee of $8.00 shipping, free returns at a store They have the hat in a store 55+ miles from me. If I had any other reason to go to Charlotte, I wouldn't mind. But to drive there to save $8.00? Really? The plot thickens. Today thru Sunday, June 4th, the hat is 30% off. Also, I have a coupon for 15% my entire purchases any one day in June (because of my birthday later in June.) It would seem that this weekend would be the time to go buy the hat or have it shipped. However, Talbot's is having a trunk show June 8th and I want to save the 15% coupon for that day, and if the hat lasts until then I could get the hat and shop the trunk sale same day.

Talbot's is not my favorite store by any means, but occasionally I do find something I like. (The fedora after I see it.) I will be wanting to shop the NAS sale so need to halt this craziness with shopping.

Very bottom line, I do hate to spend anything for shipping, and maybe hat not work and have to return it and be out that shipping fee for nothing. If I knew it would work, I have no problem paying it.

Whew, Thank you for reading this. Any comment anyone wants to make, feel free. If you don't that is o.k. too. If one of you wrote this, I would be at a loss as to how to respond.

I say, dont sweat the small stuff. If you seriously are in love with the hat, the $8 would be small potatoes. If you aren't sure, the $8 is a good excuse to forget about the hat. If you get a chance to check it out later, cool. If not, there will be other hats. Right?
I think these retail tricks are lame (not you, but the companies that try to suck people into buying more than they really want.) But I guess they are effective. I try not to play.

Totally didn't mean to sound self-righteous there, by the way. I have fallen victim to many a retail trick.

Julie, not to worry. I do not think you sounded self-righteous at all. I appreciate your kind, thoughtful remarks. When I post with all these random thoughts swirling around in my head, and I get a straight forward, condensed reply, it is very helpful to me! Thank you!

Bridgie consider the unintended side purchases you have made in pursuit of this hat. Just pay the shipping and pretend it is part of the price, I think it will be a relief!

I totally agree with Shevia. I think if you knew you would like and keep the hat then you wouldn't begrudge the shipping. It is because you are afraid you will return it and then be out the shipping cost. The shipping is your price for trying something you really like (and according to you, is your signature). Not that high a price to pay if it is a unique piece that is a good reflection of your style.

At this point, have you returned all of the extra Talbot pieces you've ordered? If not, you could order a dress or jacket that takes you over the $175 threshold, and then return it with the other returns. kidding.

It's on sale now, so you don't need to wait for a larger sale. Just get the hat.

Also, I thought NAS shopping with the site was fun last year, but I've returned most of what I bought at NAS, and lots of it was on sale for cheaper later anyway. This year, I look forward to the comraderie of YLF and the delurking of busy fabbers more than I need to buy ahead of time any fall items.

Get the hat. If you don't you will always wonder and maybe have regrets. You will also be looking for that hat as you shop other hats. Don't ask how I know this.

shevia, what good insight you have. I am feeling relief already, just reading your reply. And, yes,I am facing the fact that I have already spent about 3 times what the hat (plus $8.00 shipping) lol costs, trying to save $8.00! I know I am being silly, but that is one of my traits, that I look for humor in almost all situations. Oh well, I will have to consider returning more of my unintended purchases. I do love me a Fedora. I know you like hats also. Thank you for your post. You are a jewel.

delurked, I was expecting your input on this and it simply cracks-me-up. I understand I get free shipping if I order $175.00 and I considered that, but I am afraid I would be stuck with all the extra stuff. I have a lot of nerve but I do not think I could possible go in and return all that plus what I already have here. I thought about asking my 25 yr old granddaughter to help me with it. She is a sweet young lady, but will step right up to getting something done. However, she is a single mom of a three year old, working full time at a hospital, and going to school, barely has time to shop for herself and daughter, so I didn't want to ask her to help with this first world problem as LaDonna would say. Besides, she would say, all this trouble for $8.00? I know you are right about the NAS sale. Yes, I was thinking ahead on it, thinking I would try to get one good outfit for fall. Knowing me, if I got ten (which no way my budget would permit and I have absolutely no need for ) I would be constantly returning something and looking at the next available sale items. So I resolve to take it easy this year. Whatever that means.
