The Devil Wears Prada

In this film adaptation of Lauren Weisberger’s immensely popular novel, Andrea (Anne Hathaway) lands the job of personal assistant to haughty editor-in-chief Miranda (Meryl Streep) of Runway. What follows is an engaging romp about the cutthroat fashion magazine industry in which Andrea tries to get along with her size zero obsessed co-workers, struggles to meet Miranda’s every outlandish demand, needs to deal with boyfriend problems and finally has to make some tough decisions about what to do with her life.

Watching this movie is one of my favorite me-time indulgences. My sister knows me well enough to have given me the DVD as a gift as soon as it became available.

At this point, I can have the movie on in the background and just glance up from time to time to see the gorgeous outfits Miranda (Streep) is wearing. If I were in my twenties, I’d covet Andie’s (Hathaway’s) “after” ensembles, but at 46, the 50ish boss character is my personal style icon. She wears a collection of vintage haute couture items that, in my view, are timeless. And oh, the coats! A different overcoat in each scene, all sumptuous and gorgeous.

If I have time to sit down and really watch it, I do, mainly to see Meryl Streep and Stanley Tucci turn in fabulous performances.

This is a don’t-miss for the fashion obsessed.

Incredibly fun, and Meryl Streep totally steals the show, although Emily Blunt’s entertaining performance was also a highlight for me. I actually felt that the film was an improvement on the original novel, as movie-Andrea’s character was written as being more approachable and sympathetic than in the novel.

Loved this movie and Meryl Streep’s character. I’d love to see it again and to have a chance to study the fashions that Meryl’s character wears.

All you have to do is say “Meryl Streep” and that pretty much gives the movie 5 stars in my opinion! She is such an unbelievable actor! Ok – but back to the movie. I was surprised that it was much “deeper” than I had expected (which was a chick-flick – watch it once, laugh, and then forget about it.) But it was so much more than that. I thought that the subtle glimpses that we got of Streep’s character’s doubts and insecurities, as well as her hard, iron curtain resolve – and the sacrifices she had made for her success were wonderfully conveyed without ever really being directly addressed. The emotional aspect of this movie easily matched the fashion, fashion industry insider’s look, and all of the funny and kind of uncomfortable (but wonderfully honest) aspects of the movie. One of my favorite movies in the last several years – my husband loved it too!

I remember the book left me a little underwhelmed, however watching the movie was a much better experience, thanks in no part to Meryl Streep. I couldn’t quite connect with the characters, being so far removed from my kind of existence. But the clothes are totally drool worthy and for that alone (and Streep!) it is worth a watch.

This is one of my very favorite movies. When Andie has her “transformation” and is shown in a variety of new outfits, I could just watch that part over and over and over. I actually just [unintentionally] got my hair cut like Andie’s and my husband said “you look like that girl in that movie you like”. I had no idea what he was talking about until he said “you know, the one about clothes”. Then I got it.
