This one was a challenge for me.

My colourblock diptych picks up on the primary colours, but my two parts (top and skirt) are separated by a black line rather than white space. Of course, since this is a grocery shopping scene, I need a tote bag! For me, this bag (made of paper) echoes the pattern of the photo, with the lines going in the opposite direction.

And for those of you who are thoroughly sick of my white skirt, I promise not to wear it tomorrow!

(Wow...good thing we voted KEEP on that baby. What would I have done this week otherwise!)

When I saw this photograph, what came to mind was that there's a lot going on. To capture that feeling and the riot of color, I chose a vintage summer skirt with a scenic conversational print. To capture the same color confusion on top like in the top of the photo, I added a scarf that's also a colorful scenic conversational print. This looks rather silly and I wouldn't wear it out this way. I usually wear this skirt with the Hinge denim vest or a denim jacket, collar popped, over a sleeveless tank.

Suz - that tote is spot on.
Joy - what a lovely interpretation.

I found it hard to get a grasp of this picture. I could not isolate any of the colors and I was overwhelmed by the shapes. So ultimately I was inspired to do a bit of print mixing, which is very unusual for me.
I am including a close-up, so you can see how this skirt reminded me of the painting.

Suz, thank you. You can thank Bella for this challenge to get me going. I played along last time but couldn't get photos. I enjoyed your interpretation with the primary colors and shopping bag.
Bella, pattern mixing is perfect for this photo and yours is genius. I can see why the pattern of the skirt reminded you of the photo with the horizontal lines and variations in shape.

Bella, I know just what you mean. It was really hard for me to get a grasp on this one, too. What Joy said - a lot going on. Can't wait for Mary K's interpretation. But I LOVE your pattern mixing and the skirt absolutely echoes the picture.

Part 1: Please excuse technical difficulties in delivering today's programme to you

To me, this photograph had Heather written all over it, so just for a short while I had grand ideas about pretending to be her and coming up with some delicious patterns and color schemes for today’s challenge, but:
- I am not Heather
- I don’t have Heather’s colorful wardrobe OR her gift to Mix’nMatch
- One “patterny” thing I singled out for this challenge has has failed me miserably, the fuchsia tie-dye top did not match any of the camis I needed for layering.

And just as I thought it won’t be fun, I swapped the fuchsia for the identical grey tie-dye top, and the color TV suddenly became good old black and white.

I was back on track.

Suz-your bag sends me vibes of the photo, lovely all together

Joy-lovely skirt and the pattern is perfect for this challenge. So much fun seeing gorgeous you after all this time.

Bella- the colors in your outfit are unexpected, but certainly give off the same energy as the photo. Really love this outfit, so classy!

I am super happy with how today's outfit turned out! And I don't want you to think I'm obsessed or anything, but last night I was sitting in a box at the Hollywood Bowl, and Herbie Hancock was playing and Chaka Khan was singing, and all of a sudden I thought "If I wear my white belt, it'll be like the white space between the two parts of the diptych!" LOL

Anyway, for me it was all about the bright colors and the chaotic pattern. The scarf is from Sunday's swap and seemed just perfect! The yellow Halogen skirt and Target tee are the two major colors that jump out of the photo from my monitor, with the white belt from the consignment store. The watch and earrings for the bits of blue in the photo. The white jacket because I have to be be-jacketed for work, and the white bag as a nod to the 99 Cent Store's white plastic bags.

And you guys!! My teal pumps are the blue "9"s in the 99 Cent Store logo! How fun is that???

This photo is really chaotic and loud, and the colors are predominantly bright and warm with flashes of white. I chose a very ALGO dress, which is bright pink and pattern mixes all by itself with a white/yellow floral pattern AND orange/magenta wavy stripes. It also has a ruffle at the neckline! I added a white sash to mimic the white line across the middle of the photo, and a red bolero with yellow buttons for a additional pop of yellow, since yellow is actually the color that I see first in the photo. Cognac platforms in keeping with the warm colors theme. Finally, a bunch of skinny silver bangles with silver and turquoise dangly things because I wanted something noisy to reflect the chaotic nature of the photo, and these bracelets jingle every time I move.

On a more abstract note, this photo is all about consumerism. In that vein, the dress is from a big box store (Target) and the bracelets from a fast-fashion mecca (H&M). While neither was 99 cents, they were both very cheap. (The bolero is hand-knit, though, providing perhaps a welcome counterpoint to all this consumerism.)

I knew MaryK would knock this one out of the park. I think you pretty much could have pulled the items out of your closet blindfolded and had a killer interpretation.

Bella- love that you captured the essence but used more muted colors.
Suz- perfect color blocking!

I'll get a pic in a bit, but mine is pretty pathetic. oh well, at least I'm not nekked. hmmm, I have another idea though... maybe I'll go try it

Bella, you are classy as always. I too, opted for the monochrome option .

MaryK, I knew you would come up with something brilliant; this outfit really echoes the colour balance in the picture. The white belt echoes the line through the picture perfectly, AND looks fab.

I couldn't get my head around all the colour here, so I went monochrome with a ditzy print to echo the pixelated vibe of the colourful scene. Here 'tis: Boss jacket, H&M dress, Dune flats.

I'm so glad we've had this challenge this week, Bella, it's great to have some inspiration to work around .

Part 2: Continuity

When I first saw this photograph all I could see were the colors - it felt a bit noisy, yet still in harmony. Then I noticed endless rows and colored lines. The stripes obviously came to mind, but my striped clothes are very high contrast and not in keeping with my overall impression of the scene.

Continuity stood out as the theme, something that in term of clothing I see in tie-dyeing, so I wanted to work around that. After the planned color scheme suffered a hit leaving me on the familiar neutrals ground, I resorted to stacked bracelets to add color. They were the accessory I knew I’d use the moment I saw the photo. I am also wearing hose with zigzag pattern, not exactly lines, but they address the continuity aspect and add texture.

As the outfit noticeably lacks color and warmth, I reached for my treasured Hugs-and-Kisses necklace in warm red, white and yellow gold, graduation gift from my dad.

The necklace unexpectedly became conversation piece with my work colleague originally from South Dakota who, after seeing the necklace, told me about the Black Hills . And, she also taught me what this jewellery pattern is called, I had no idea.

So, not the most colorful, but at least I finally wore this top. I love it and its fuchsia twin.

Bonus photo added so you can see there was some color going on. It's my version of ALOG, lol.

Putting up my photos, then will go back and look at the rest with more leisure at lunch time.

The inspiration picture said - LOTS of colors to me. And tiny pieces. Could not go into anything philosophical or artistic in thinking about it... usually I am more analytical.

I pulled out anything that said maybe and surprised myself with another new outfit. Here is what I am wearing today:
Skirt - Sears, at least 5-7 yrs. old (wore to one daughter's wedding shower - can't remember which one - could've been over 6 yrs. ago) - cream with cherry pink dots. Has been too long for style recently, though I love the color and shape.
Top - yellow t w/ rosette things, this year from TJMaxx.
Shoes - dark blue patent sandals - about 3-4 yrs. old.
Those items represent the bright primary colors in the picture. Added yellow earrings, turquoise and green bracelets to bring in the variety aspect.

The other pictures #3-5 are attempts at adding an Izod cotton blouse which has colors and paisley that I love. It actually looks nice with the skirt but made me look fat, and the only belt I could possibly use is way too intense red. And I got so hot trying it on that I left it at home! What do you think, though?

@cjh, wow, there is so much going on here and you are really pushing your boundaries, yet remain truthful to yourself. Would you consider shortening the skirt just a bit, I think it's way too long for your fab legs. Also, I love the bracelets and the earrings! I also like the belted option - way to go!

Thanks for all the tote-bag (and garden) love, ladies! That bag was a gift from a girlfriend who has no interest in fashion whatsoever. Who would have guessed it would become such a hit at YLF? ETA it's a bit tough to see in the photo (at least on my screen) but it actually has most of the colours from the photo, there's a distinct blue, yellow, black, white.

Lynne, I love the way you've stayed cool and neutral and yet manage to pick up on the busy-ness of that picture!

Ornella, the texture in that top is perfect; very similar to my bag. And your bracelets are going to give even Heather's accessories some stiff competition!

cjh, isn't it fun digging around in the closet for things you might never have put together? Love that red belt, by the way. I want one like that!

@Bella, that is a great mix of patterns. The skirt does show that tiny pattern reflecting the detailed nature of the picture. I like the combination very much.

@Mary K - Wow, is all I can say. The colors are fantastic and I LOVE the blue touches. You thought of everything. To have that rolling through your head when doing other activities - so creative!

okay, so I managed to pull together something...

the white belt is the nod to diptych, and then I went with as much colorblocking as my closet would support. Purple tank, "guava" stripes, denim shorts and turquoise beads (the heart pendant mixed with the beads is a nod toward the kitschy stuff you can find at the 99c. store

so, do I dare leave the house, or would you all advise that I change before presenting myself to the world?
