This challenge couldn't have come at a better time, as I'm on the hunt for both shorts and leggings and am actually about to go shopping in about an hour. Leggings are proving a little tough because of my size, but shorts I'm sure I can do. This should be fun!!
I may not be able to post the results until Sunday night some time, as I'm off for the weekend. Is that going to pose a problem?

And thanks for the complements, Rucci. It made me smile.

Hmmm, shopping trip was not a success. I think I may have one solitary pair of shorts somewhere, and if so I'll use them. If they don't fit, what would be an acceptable alternative?

Ok, here goes! I was able to stick with the terms of the original challenge and come up with two outfits involving shorts. Here they are, awaiting your feedback. I'm particularly out of my comfort zone here, so I'm especially keen for critiques. That said, I really enjoyed devising these outfits and hope at least one of them passes muster so I can actually wear it!

2. Plaid shorts and white top with feminine touches. I'm especially anxious for commentary on this getup. Is the pattern on the shorts attractive and can I even pull it off? I worry I'm too pear-like and maybe should avoid patterns down there.

Thanks, Rucci, for a fun and practical challenge! You got me in gear to tackle something I'd been putting off and may have helped expand my summer clothing repertoir.

Oh, Michelle! I LOVE both looks! LOVE how you even brought in the purses and shoes to go perfectly with each outfit. Yes, yes, and YES again you can absolutely wear both looks all summer long! Both sandals are very cute, but I am very impressed by the white ones. Cute, summery and they look comfy.

The plaid shorts are adorable! Where did you get them?

omg, BIG BIG thumbs up from me for BOTH outfits! i can't decide which one i love best. the first has a more polished vibe, and the second just screams summer with the plaid and the bright purse! you can most definitely rock those shorts, what were you worried about?

Michelle, awesome shorts selection! I hope that you can put any concerns about your legs/ankles to rest. Your gams looked great to begin with, but with the shorts hitting at the right length, your legs look SO long and shapely.

I also have a bit of handbag envy - you have a great collection.

Well done, Michelle. I like both looks. I'm a sucker for plaid. You make it work. The first is definitely a more smart casual look. The second is probably just casual, but we need outfits for those casual times, too. I hope you feel great in these outfits.

Both of these, but the black shorts in particular, have lots of potential for MANY more looks with different tops. I think you've got plenty of room to play for the summer.

I absolutely adore the first outfit Michelle! Very polished and elegant, love the colour combo too. And I'm with Kari here, your legs look great!

The second outfit is a great casual look. I love the colours of the shorts, and I would never have thought of pairing it with a bright pink bag. How clever of you;-) Beautiful white sandals as well.

Michelle -- so many raves, and I concur completely. Rather than repeating how good you look, I'll add something about why I think the answer to your question about plaid on the bottom is "yes."

I think (and I'm new to this so I hope Angie will steer this idea back on course if I'm missing the mark) that the reason you can totally carry off the plaid shorts is that you have styled them with the correct length top. What would not flatter a pretty pear would be to have the top too short, so that the plaid and the pear were beginning at the same place, if that makes sense.

This way, the pear is skimmed over by the elongated top line, and the plaid is just visual interest below.

I'm impressed that there hasn't been one challenge un-nailed. We must all be learning a lot, Angie!

Well done, Michelle! You look fresh and put together. I love the button down top with the black shorts. It's a lovely shade of apricot and looks great with your coloring.

I like how you paired the sportiness of the plaid shorts with the more feminine top. You definitely put a lot of thought into this challenge and more than met it!

Great choice of sandals and bags! I think you are ready for a summer of fun!

P.S. I have a pair of black sateen walk shorts that I never know what to wear with. I think I am going to try them with my apple green, three-quarter length sleeve button down blouse. I'll call it my "channeling Michelle" outfit!

I have to be redundant and reiterate what everyone else has said -- great job Michelle! Your first one is a great way of wearing black shorts in the summer, paired with the light top and bag. The necklace does not add too much black; as a matter of fact, I didn't really notice it until I read your comment. I think your delicate necklace is the way to go for such a dark color in this outfit.

You can totally wear plaid pants. I like how your light top echos your light sandals -- nice balance!
