Why does this outfit look so bad?

Is it the mock wrap top? The shorts? Or the sandals?

Thanks for any advice/guidance you can give me on this one.

You are too hard on yourself, my dear! The outfit is not that bad, and I am positive that the camera angle is simply doing you no favors. Of course you are going to look like you have short lower body if the camera is high and pointed down. Have your photographer crouch down and shoot more levelly.

Otherwise, I do think two tweaks would make a difference:

1) low-vamp shoes (or one with a heel). This is a nice-to-have not a necessity. Outfit looks fine with the sandals you've got, but if you want a longer leg line, low-vamp will give it to you.

2) sleeveless shirt. You have slightly broad shoulders compared to your hips (as do I - we are built very similarly). Sleeveless is going to be a much more flattering look for you, as it will give the illusion of more balanced hips/shoulders. Trust me on this one: I have always hated sleeveless because I think my arms are chunky, but I have realized over time and with experimenting that this rule of thumb is very true: sleeveless (for summer) is far more flattering. (unfortunately it's hard to find sleeveless that isn't too strappy ... but that's another discussion!)

I also think maybe this wrap shirt is a bit too big? It looks a bit loose at the bra band level. You want it to nip in nicely here. As for mid-section disguising, if the size down seems too tight across the tummy, scrunch it. The scrunched fabric will hide away lumps and bulges. I think you would look awesome in the Sweat Pea wrap shirts - have you tried those?

But these are all just little tweaks! You look fine as is.

I also think the blue top is too large. Try pinning it in back and retake a photo - see if that helps.
Waist wrap tops are tricky - the wrap part has to be perfect and that's so hard!

The clams llok fine and the sandals are cute - a low vamp shoe could be an option but I think it is the top with the issue :) Definitely not cute you:)

I think you need a shorter, more fitted top. I like the shorts & the sandals!

Another who thinks the top is the problem. I'd like to see a voluminous top with banded bottom.

bitsofpieces, you are way too harsh on yourself! This is not a terrible outfit. Shiny and the other girls have you sorted in terms of how it can be brought up a notch; I think the shirt is the key ingredient to change and I like the idea of sleeveless.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Funny... I have been avoiding sleeveless shirts all summer long (To the point that I have a very distinctive and unattractive Farmer's Tan) because I am ashamed of my flabby arms. I've been doing pushups more often, and I still have arm flab. It's embarrassing.

Yet, for some reason, the short-sleeves do seem to make me look dumpier.

Anyhoo... thanks for the thoughts!

Short sleeves like this are hard for lots of people to pull off, even people with nice arms. There have been a few demonstrations of this on the group, how much an improvement sleeveless is, regardless of your arm size/shape. The eye doesn't focus on the arm. And your arms are by no means chunky and out of shape - they are just fine.

Try rolling the sleeves up, and pinning the top in the back at the waist, and take another pic.

Oh also, looking at your pic again, the shoulders of that shirt seem too large - see where the shoulder seam is sitting? It's on your arm, not your shoulder. So I really do think you need the next size down!
